... Read moreOkay, so I'm in the thick of prom dress shopping, and if you're like me, trying on dresses can be a whole journey! Since I've got these two gorgeous gowns coming in – that vibrant strapless one with the watercolor pleated maxi skirt and the elegant ruffled beige dress – I've been thinking about all the ways to make the try-on process as smooth as possible. Here are some of my go-to tips for when you're doing your own prom dress try-on, whether it's for 2024 or even looking ahead to prom dress 2026!
First off, come prepared! When I tried on dresses in stores, I always made sure to wear the right undergarments – think strapless bras, nipple covers, or even shapewear, if that's what you plan to wear on the big night. It makes such a difference in how the dress lays. Also, bring some heels similar to what you'd wear to prom. You don't want to fall in love with a dress only to find out it's too long or too short with your actual shoes! For these two dresses I ordered, I'll definitely be trying them on with my favorite block heels.
Next, pay attention to movement. Prom night is all about dancing and celebrating, right? So, when you try on a dress, walk around, sit down, raise your arms. Can you move comfortably? Does it feel restrictive? The strapless white structured bodice on the watercolor dress looks stunning, but I'll be checking if it stays put when I'm moving. The multiple tiers of ruffles on the beige dress might add some fun movement, but I'll make sure it's not too cumbersome or gets caught easily.
And since I asked for accessory help, let's dive a bit deeper into that! For both of my strapless options, I'm already envisioning some beautiful gold jewelry. With a strapless neckline, you have a lot of freedom! A delicate gold layered necklace or a statement choker could work wonderfully. My personal preference is usually a single, elegant gold pendant or some sparkling gold drop earrings to really draw attention to the neckline and collarbones. And don't forget bracelets – a simple gold cuff or a stack of thinner bangles can complete the look without overpowering the dress.
For hairstyles, with a strapless gown, an elegant updo like a classic chignon, a sophisticated bun, or a sleek high pony often looks amazing as it highlights the neckline. But loose, flowing waves can also be incredibly chic and romantic, especially with that subtle floral pattern on the beige dress. It really depends on the vibe you're going for and what makes you feel most confident!
Finally, always try to see the dress in different lighting. What looks good in your bedroom might look different under brighter lights, or even in photos. Getting a second opinion from a trusted friend or family member is always a good idea too – they can spot things you might miss! I'm so excited to share how these two dresses look on me soon, and can't wait for your advice to help me pick the perfect one for my prom night!
