DIY Airplant Hanger

Hey everyone! I was so excited to share my beaded air plant hangers, and I've had a few questions about how I made them and what materials I used, so I wanted to dive a bit deeper! It's truly a fun and rewarding little craft project that anyone can tackle, even if you’re new to DIY. First off, for the adjustable wire, I found that a good quality craft wire, around 18-20 gauge, works perfectly. You want something sturdy enough to hold its shape but still pliable enough to bend and adjust. I usually pick up a spool of aluminum or copper wire from my local craft store – they come in various colors too, which is a bonus! Then, for the beads, this is where you can really let your creativity shine! I love using a mix of wooden beads, glass beads, and even some smaller seed beads for texture. Make sure the holes in your beads are large enough for your chosen wire to pass through easily. A good tip is to lay out your bead pattern beforehand on a flat surface. This helps you visualize the design before you commit to stringing them. To start, I cut a length of wire – usually about 2-3 feet, depending on how long I want the hanger to be. You can always trim it later. I create a small loop at one end to secure the first bead, or sometimes I just twist the wire around itself a few times. Then, I start threading my beads! I usually measure out the length I want for the beaded section, leaving generous ends of wire free. The adjustable part is super simple. Once you've beaded your desired length, you'll want to form a cage-like structure at the bottom to cradle your air plant. I basically create three or four 'arms' from the wire, twisting them together at the top to form a loop for hanging, and then gently shaping the bottom ends into a basket shape. The beauty of this design is that as your air plant grows, you can gently reshape the wire 'basket' to accommodate it. It’s so satisfying to see your plant thrive in a holder you made yourself! Beyond the beaded style, there are so many other fantastic DIY air plant holder ideas out there. I’ve seen people use small pieces of driftwood, hollowed-out corks, or even repurposed ceramic pieces. For a super quick and easy option, you can hot glue a small magnet to the back of a pretty seashell and simply place your air plant inside – instant fridge decor! Or, if you're feeling a bit more ambitious, a simple macrame hanger is always a classic. You just need some cotton cord and a few basic knots to create a beautiful, airy holder. Remember, air plants are pretty resilient, but they do need a good soak once a week (or more, depending on your climate) and bright, indirect light. So, when you're designing your holder, think about how easily you can remove the plant for watering. That's why I love my adjustable wire ones – it's a breeze to take them out for their weekly bath!
