What do you do with your beauty samples?

A few years back, probably during pandemic time when online shopping was the only option, I noticed I had sample products shoved anywhere and everywhere, and if they didn’t get tossed in a drawer, they got thrown away. Because I got some with just about every beauty purchase, I decided maybe I should find a better way to store and use them.

Thus, the sample container was born!

✨ What is it and what’s in it?

- Every beauty sample I get goes into the jar. From perfumes to shampoo to face wash and acne trials, everything goes in there. Since you get two free samples with every Sephora order and can always accumulate freebies when ordering with Ulta, there’s a consistent flow and change in what samples are actually in there.

✨ How do I use it?

- I build out my travel bags with it! I’m long distance with my boyfriend and also have to travel 6 hours home, so this helps me pack lighter and try new products!

- when I run out of a staple product, I try to use at least one of the samples before opening another new bottle of my mainstay product so I’m cycling through and nothing expires.

✨ Why?

- I hate being wasteful, and I’m also insanely forgetful and can easily lose the tiny samples, so this is my way of trying to get around both of those issues by having them stored in one place that’s easily accessible so I’m more likely to use them!

- I’m always happy to find new products I love, and using the trials/samples is a way to do that! I’ve added and changed some of what I regularly use because of these and I love that I got to try before I invested! There’s also products I didn’t love, and I would’ve hated buying them only to try to give them away because they weren’t for me!

Have you found products you love because of the free samples?

... Read moreIt's so true, finding ways to try new beauty products without committing to full-size purchases is a game-changer! My 'Sample Jar' system has honestly transformed how I approach my beauty routine, especially when it comes to discovering new cosmetic product samples. Beyond just getting freebies with Sephora or Ulta orders, there are so many other smart ways to snag those precious little treasures. Have you ever explored brand websites directly? Many offer trial sizes or deluxe samples with purchases, or sometimes even as standalone kits. Another fantastic avenue is beauty subscription boxes – while they cost money, they're curated with discovery in mind, giving you a diverse range of items to test without the full commitment. Don't forget about department store beauty counters; often, if you express interest in a product, they're happy to give you a small sample to try before you buy. Online beauty communities and forums can also be goldmines for swaps or recommendations on where to find the best samples. Even some eco-conscious brands offer sample packs to reduce waste and encourage mindful consumption. Once you have your stash, making the most of it is absolutely key. I've learned to be strategic about my beauty sampling. For instance, if I'm eyeing a new high-end serum or a specialized foundation, I'll prioritize using any small samples of similar products first. This helps me gauge if a certain ingredient, texture, or shade works for my skin before I spend a lot of money. I also keep a few specific samples for 'emergency kits' – a tiny cleanser and moisturizer for an unexpected overnight stay, or a travel-sized perfume for a quick freshen-up at the office. It saves space and means I don't have to decant my full-size favorites, which is a lifesaver for travel. Another critical tip: don't let them expire! One of the main reasons I created my system for organizing beauty samples is to ensure I cycle through them regularly. I try to integrate at least one sample into my routine each week, or whenever a staple product runs out. It’s a fun way to constantly try new things and find new beauty favs without the pressure of a big investment. This approach has led me to some incredible discoveries that I now regularly purchase, proving that small cosmetic product samples can indeed lead to big beauty wins! When you're trying a sample, pay close attention to how your skin reacts, the scent, texture, and overall efficacy. Does it do what it promises? Does it feel good? If a sample truly impresses you over a few uses, that's your cue to consider the full-size. It's a risk-free way to build a beauty routine perfectly tailored to you, avoiding those costly impulse buys that end up gathering dust. So next time you get a sample, don't just toss it in a drawer – incorporate it into your 'Sample Jar' strategy and unlock a world of beauty exploration!
