Complex PTSD

Starting your mental health journey is such a freeing feeling. It takes courage to pick therapy back up and commit to bettering yourself, especially when you're ready to break free from negative feelings and behaviors to live a fuller, healthier life. ✨🍃

I’ve been diagnosed with depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and have taken medication for both. But something still didn’t feel quite right—I realized these were just symptoms of something deeper.

Then, the pandemic hit, and I stopped therapy until this past month. After a few sessions with my new therapist, I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). My therapist recommended a workbook to help me understand and process C-PTSD, and I’m ready to dive in.

In short, Complex PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after prolonged exposure to trauma, like abuse or neglect. It involves classic PTSD symptoms—flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety—but also emotional regulation issues, negative self-perception, relationship difficulties, and a sense of hopelessness.

The more we talked about it, the more I felt validated. The physical pain and conflicting emotions I’ve been feeling now make sense.

Did you know that C-PTSD can cause gastrointestinal issues too? Due to the "gut-brain axis," chronic stress from trauma can mess with your gut, leading to things like IBS or acid reflux. Wild, right?

I have a lot of work ahead of me, and I’m nervous about the workbook—it feels like it could hit me hard. But that’s part of the journey.

Time to start Chapter 1: Complex PTSD vs. PTSD. Let’s do this. 💪

... Read moreComplex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a condition that arises from prolonged trauma, impacting mental and emotional well-being. Unlike classic PTSD, C-PTSD manifests in various ways, including mood swings, anxiety, and difficulties in relationships. Trauma can affect the gut-brain axis, leading to various gastrointestinal issues like IBS and acid reflux as the body tries to cope with chronic stress. Understanding C-PTSD involves recognizing its symptoms, including flashbacks and heightened emotional responses. Effective coping strategies such as mindfulness, therapy, and self-compassion play crucial roles in recovery. Connecting with support networks and educational resources can pave the way for healing and better emotional regulation. Embracing this journey is vital for regaining control over one’s life, as each small step leads to greater self-awareness and resilience. Those affected often find that sharing experiences through forums or support groups enriches their understanding and fosters a sense of community. Healing from C-PTSD is not a linear path, but with commitment and the right tools, a healthier, fulfilling life is achievable.

The process of working through both are completely different. I was diagnosed with deep grief, then that associated with PTSD. I finally ended up with a therapist that asked hard questions and said yes, I was still grieving but I had underlying C-PTSD that was causing me bigger issues. That was a year and a half ago.

Complex PTSD
We are in a constant state of hyper vigilance waiting for the next thing to go wrong. Even if things aren’t bad, our brains are preparing us for the worst because it remembers the trauma. We think everyone has bad intentions because of being abused or because we think we don’t deserve good.
