As a new mom navigating the world of baby-led weaning (BLW), I found that understanding a few key principles made the process much less stressful and more rewarding. One eye-opening tip was to prioritize iron-rich foods right from the start rather than fruits, because by around six months, babies’ natural iron stores decline rapidly. This helped me ensure my baby got the essential nutrients needed for growth. I also learned that serving larger pieces of food can be safer than tiny ones since tiny pieces are harder for babies to control and can pose a choking risk. Knowing the difference between gagging and choking was vital; gagging is loud and part of the learning process, whereas choking is silent and requires immediate action. This knowledge gave me peace of mind during feeding sessions. Another surprising insight was that purees alone do not teach chewing skills. Babies need to experience real textures to develop their oral motor skills effectively. So, offering appropriately sized soft chunks or strips helped my baby practice chewing while exploring new flavors. Introducing allergenic foods like eggs, peanuts, and legumes early — around six months — and repeating exposure can reduce allergy risks by up to 80%. This early introduction was reassuring because it helps build tolerance rather than fear. Lastly, I found helpful apps like Tummi very useful for tracking nutrients, allergens, and safe serving options, which made meal planning less overwhelming. The goal during this stage is exploration combined with nutritional support, with breastmilk or formula remaining the primary nutrition source until about 12 months. Overall, BLW felt less intimidating once I adjusted to a baby-centered mindset rather than one driven by fear. Babies are capable learners, and giving them the right environment and safe guidance helps set a strong foundation for healthy eating habits.
