Starting your baby on solids can be both exciting and overwhelming. From my experience, incorporating these seven baby led weaning (BLW) tips really helped ease the transition. First, introducing 2 ounces of water daily at around six months helped keep my baby's digestion smooth and prevented constipation. Keeping prune juice on hand proved a gentle remedy when she experienced any digestive discomfort, avoiding harsh treatments. Allergy preparedness was crucial—I made sure to introduce one new food at a time, waiting two to three days before trying another to spot any reactions early. Having allergy medicine ready gave me peace of mind, especially knowing to watch for signs such as hives or vomiting, and understanding when to seek emergency help. I found the seating position to be key; ensuring my baby sat upright and well-supported helped her swallow safely and reduced choking risks. The portion sizes mattered too—starting with finger-sized, soft foods that she could easily mash encouraged her to feed herself confidently. One important lesson was understanding gagging versus choking. Gagging is loud and a natural reflex babies learn from, while choking is silent and requires immediate action. This knowledge helped me stay calm and attentive during mealtimes. Using apps like the Tummi app helped me track foods, allergens, and nutritional value, which was incredibly useful for introducing a wide variety of healthy options including iron-rich fruits and common allergens like peanut butter safely. Overall, these tips helped me feel empowered and prepared throughout the baby led weaning journey, making it a positive experience for both baby and me.
