New moms NEED to see this on starting solids ❤️

1/22 Edited to

... Read moreStarting solids is a significant milestone for both babies and new moms, and it comes with many challenges and learning curves. From my personal experience and learning from various parenting resources, I've realized the importance of a few key practices to make this journey smoother and healthier. Firstly, textures matter as babies grow. While purees are fine in the beginning, by around 9 months, babies benefit greatly from exploring more textured foods. This helps them develop chewing skills and better manage their mouths, laying the groundwork for safer eating later. Milk is undoubtedly important, but it shouldn’t replace solid foods too early. Many new moms, including myself initially, thought that feeding mostly milk meant the baby was full. However, babies need solid foods rich in iron since their natural iron stores decrease drastically around 6 months. Including lentils, beef, or beans in their diet daily, paired with foods rich in vitamin C (like oranges or strawberries), can significantly improve iron absorption and prevent anemia. Variety also plays a key role. I found myself defaulting to a handful of “safe” foods during tiring days, but introducing a wide range of tastes and textures early on helps reduce picky eating later. Keep rotating allergens like eggs, peanuts, and legumes regularly; studies show that ongoing exposure rather than one-time introduction improves their tolerance by up to 80%. Self-feeding is another cornerstone of this process. While it’s undeniably messy and at times stressful, allowing babies to feed themselves fosters independence and improves their fine motor skills much faster than spoon-feeding alone. Offering water during meals in small sips also helps babies get used to swallowing solids and prevents constipation as their plates get more diverse. Lastly, technology can be of great help. I used recommended apps, like the Tummi app my pediatrician suggested, which provides guidance on which foods and allergens are safe to serve, giving peace of mind during this often overwhelming stage. Remember, starting solids is more than just nutrition — it’s about nurturing your baby's growth, confidence, and curiosity toward food. Embrace the mess and the challenge; it’s all part of helping your little one thrive.

A. Breastmilk is the only thing your baby needs until they’re 12 months old. Solids are just for fun. They get all they need from your milk. Just add more iron to your diet if you’re worried about that. B. Make your own purées. Those jars of baby food are full of heavy metals and also you’re feeding your baby food that is literally older than him/her. They’re plenty of recipes on Pinterest for baby purées, and it will make your baby a less picky eater.

This image features various iron-rich baby foods like salmon, avocado, lentils, broccoli, and sweet potato fries on divided plates. The text emphasizes feeding iron-rich foods first, such as meat, lentils, and beans, daily as baby iron stores deplete by 6 months.
