Starting solids can be overwhelming, especially when there’s so much advice out there. One key insight I learned is the importance of iron-rich foods such as beef, lentils, and egg yolks as initial foods rather than starting with fruits alone. Pairing these with vitamin C-rich foods helped increase iron absorption significantly. Around 8 to 9 months, my baby’s gums were strong enough to handle textured foods, so I introduced mashed and soft finger foods instead of sticking to purees. This not only helped develop chewing skills but also made mealtimes more engaging. I also followed the more recent guidance to introduce common allergens like peanuts and eggs early, at around six months, which was reassuring knowing it could reduce allergy risks. Breastmilk remained a big part of my baby’s diet, but I made sure to gradually introduce real foods from 6 to 7 months, mixing breastmilk into solid meals to ease the transition. Variety became a priority—I made it a point to rotate many different foods throughout the week to prevent picky eating habits. Tracking foods and allergens was another helpful strategy; using an app to log everything made it easier to remember what my baby had tried and spot any reactions quickly. Additionally, giving water with meals helped with swallowing thicker textures and prevented constipation, which was a relief. I also embraced self-feeding for my baby from six months old, allowing her to explore foods independently, which strengthened her healthy food relationship and fine motor skills. Lastly, patience was key. I learned not to give up after my baby’s first refusal of new foods—sometimes it takes 10 to 15 tries for babies to accept a new flavor or texture. Consistently offering without pressure created a positive mealtime environment and helped build her acceptance over time. In essence, these strategies combined science-backed knowledge with practical experience, turning what could have been a stressful phase into a rewarding journey for both me and my baby.
