Every new mom needs to know this before feeding their baby solids ❤️
Starting your baby on solid foods is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming with so much advice out there. One key aspect I learned through experience is that not just any food will do when your baby hits about six months old—iron is absolutely essential. Around 6 months, babies' natural iron stores begin to deplete, which makes iron-rich foods critical to support their energy, growth, and immune health. In my journey, I found introducing iron-rich starters like soft shredded beef, lamb, egg yolks, salmon, sardines, lentils, and even green veggies like broccoli and spinach was game-changing. These foods ensure that your baby doesn't just fill up but gets the nourishment needed for healthy development. What's interesting is that pairing these with vitamin C-rich foods such as sweet potatoes, berries, or tomatoes surprisingly enhances the body's iron absorption, making the feeding even more effective. It's also important to introduce solids safely—giving one new food every 2 to 3 days allows you to monitor for any allergic reactions like hives, swelling, or vomiting. Distinguishing between gagging and choking can be daunting, but keeping foods appropriately soft, shredded, or mashed reduces risks. I personally used a tracking app to log foods tried and allergens noticed, which helped me stay organized and confident throughout the weaning process. Starting solids doesn't have to be stressful. When you focus on two main pillars — iron-rich nutrition and safe feeding practices — you are setting your baby up for a healthy and enjoyable transition. Remember, this phase is also a time to bond and explore new tastes together, so take it at your own pace and celebrate each little milestone.
