This is something all new parents NEED to know before starting solids ❤️

4/17 Edited to

... Read moreStarting solids with your baby is such an exciting milestone, but it comes with its share of challenges and questions. One thing I learned as a new parent was how critical it is to focus on iron-rich foods right from the start. It is common to begin with fruits like avocado or bananas because they're sweet and soft, but these aren’t great sources of iron, which babies need to support their rapid growth. Introducing foods like beef, lentils, beans, egg yolks, and fish paired with vitamin C-rich foods ensures better iron absorption, which made a big difference in my baby’s energy and development. Another important tip is to move beyond purees by around 8 to 9 months. Many parents stick to smooth textures fearing their babies’ gums might not be ready for more chunky foods. However, babies’ gums are usually strong enough to handle more texture by this stage, which helps them develop chewing skills and avoid being picky later. I started offering soft-cooked veggies and small pieces of food, which encouraged self-feeding and made mealtime more interactive and fun. Early introduction of allergens like peanuts, eggs, fish, and dairy was a big change from the outdated advice of waiting until after 12 months. Research shows that starting these foods around 6 months can reduce allergy risks by up to 80%. Of course, it’s important to do this safely, perhaps with guidance from your pediatrician, but it gave me peace of mind knowing I was helping my baby build a tolerance early. One thing I struggled with at first was the tendency to extend breastfeeding or formula feeding too long without incorporating enough solids. While breastmilk is important, it lacks sufficient iron and vitamin K, so starting solids at 6 to 7 months is crucial. Mixing breastmilk into foods provided a gentle transition. Variety also helped prevent mealtime battles. I kept rotating over 75 different foods by my baby’s first birthday which seemed like a huge effort but really helped avoid picky eating. Tracking foods and allergens tried with an app offered a useful way to stay organized. Offering a small amount of water with meals was another surprise. Contrary to what I had heard, even a few ounces of water starting at 6 months is safe, helps with swallowing thicker textures, and prevents constipation. Lastly, I learned not to rush spoon-feeding. Allowing my baby to self-feed encouraged independence and a healthy relationship with food. And when he rejected new foods initially, I reminded myself that it can take 10-15 tries for babies to accept something new, so patience is key. Overall, these tips helped me navigate the messy, joyful journey of starting solids with confidence and created a positive foundation for my baby’s nutrition and development.
