How to store minced garlic! This is actually my third video on mincing garlic, but I still get questions occasionally asking what “that square block thing” is in my cooking videos 🥰 I still keep some whole garlic cloves and fresh minced garlic in the fridge, but freezing it makes my garlic last for months!
From my experience, storing minced garlic properly can really save time and reduce waste in the kitchen. After washing and drying peeled garlic cloves, trimming the root ends is important because they stay fibrous and don't soften well during cooking. I usually mince the garlic in a food processor until it reaches my desired texture, but you can also finely chop it with a knife. One tip I love is spreading the minced garlic flat in a resealable plastic bag, then drawing grid lines with the back of a knife before freezing. Once frozen, breaking the sheet into one-tablespoon squares makes it super convenient to take out just the right amount for any recipe. Keeping these squares stored flat in the freezer helps maintain garlic's fresh flavor and aroma. In addition to freezing, I also keep some whole garlic cloves and freshly minced garlic in the fridge for immediate use. However, freezing is the best way I've found to extend minced garlic's shelf life without sacrificing quality. This method saves me trips to buy fresh garlic frequently and prevents spoilage. I recommend using airtight containers or well-sealed bags to prevent the garlic from absorbing freezer odors or drying out. Also, labeling the bags with dates helps track how long they’ve been stored. With these storage tips, I always have flavorful minced garlic on hand for all my cooking needs!
