... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, I just had to come back and spill more tea about 'Butcher & Blackbird' by Brynne Weaver! After my initial review, I’ve had so many of you asking for more details, especially about how truly 'spicy' this dark romance gets and what the audiobook experience is like. So, let’s get into it!
First off, about the spice level – I mentioned it's 'spicy but not too spicy,' and I stand by that. If you're like me and you enjoy a good dose of heat in your dark romances without crossing into overly explicit territory, this one hits the sweet spot. It’s definitely not “porn” as some queries might suggest, but it’s far from vanilla. The spicy scenes are well-integrated into the plot, enhancing the intense connection between Rowan and Sloane rather than feeling gratuitous. It’s the kind of spice that makes you blush and squirm a little in your seat (trust me, I did!), focusing more on the chemistry and emotional intensity alongside the physical. It perfectly complements the 'dark' aspect of the romance, where the passion is as dangerous and compelling as the characters themselves. If you're looking for those moments that make your heart race, you'll find them here, beautifully written and impactful.
Now, for those of you who prefer listening, let's talk about the 'Butcher & Blackbird' audiobook! The narrators absolutely deserve a shout-out. Lucy Rivers and Joe Arden bring Rowan and Sloane to life in such an incredible way. Their performances truly elevate the story, especially during those gripping and, yes, spicy chapters. Joe Arden's voice for Rowan is just chef's kiss – he captures that dangerous charm perfectly. And Lucy Rivers? Her portrayal of Sloane is phenomenal, giving her depth and resilience. Listening to them navigate the intricate plot and the undeniable pull between these two characters made the experience even more immersive. If you’re on the fence about whether to read or listen, I’d highly recommend the audiobook for an extra layer of engagement. It really made me feel like I was right there with them, from intense confrontations to whispered confessions.
Beyond the spice and the amazing narration, what really stuck with me about 'Butcher & Blackbird' is the unique premise. Two murderers falling in love sounds inherently dark, right? And it is, but it's also incredibly nuanced. The emotional journey these characters go through, despite their violent tendencies, is surprisingly empathetic. You find yourself rooting for them, even when you know you probably shouldn't! It’s a testament to Brynne Weaver’s writing that she makes these morally gray characters so captivating.
I primarily read this on my Kindle, as you can see from my photos, and it was perfect for devouring late into the night. There were so many moments I just couldn't put it down. If you're a fan of thrillers mixed with a very passionate, almost obsessive, romance, then you need to add this to your TBR. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions. It's a dark ride, but oh-so-worth it! What are some of your favorite dark romances? Let me know in the comments!
