just flew in from Washington
I’ve never been to Canada so I feel like documenting it here, by the way any suggestions for things I could do in Ottawa?🥰🌚
Wow, I'm finally in Ottawa, and what an incredible city it's turning out to be! As a first-timer, I was a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out what to see and do, but I've started putting together my own little guide for anyone else planning a trip to Ottawa. From iconic landmarks to cozy corners, here’s what I’ve found so far and some advice based on my experience! Must-See Attractions for Your Ottawa Visit: Naturally, my first stop was Parliament Hill. Seriously, the architecture here is breathtaking, and I spent ages just admiring the historical structures. If you're visiting, definitely try to catch the changing of the guard ceremony in summer – it's a real spectacle! I also recommend taking a free guided tour of the Parliament Buildings; it gives you such a great insight into Canadian history. Just remember to check their website for booking tickets in advance, as they can fill up quickly. Another highlight for me was the National Gallery of Canada. Even if you're not a huge art buff, the building itself is a work of art, and they have an incredible collection. I also made sure to visit the Canadian Museum of History, which is just across the river in Gatineau. It’s super easy to get to, and I heard their parking is quite convenient, which is a huge plus if you’re driving. The Grand Hall there is truly stunning – you'll know what I mean when you see it! Exploring Ottawa's Vibrant Neighbourhoods & Food Scene: No trip to Ottawa is complete without a stroll through the ByWard Market. This place is buzzing! It’s one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets, full of fresh produce, artisanal goods, and so many unique shops and restaurants. I absolutely loved hopping from stall to stall, trying local treats. It’s also a fantastic spot for a self-made breakfast tour. I started my day with a delicious pastry, then found a charming cafe for a truly excellent Espresso, and finished with some local fruit. It’s such a fun way to experience the city’s culinary offerings at your own pace. For those who love being outdoors, a walk or bike ride along the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site!) is a must. In winter, it transforms into the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink, which sounds magical, but even in warmer months, it’s beautiful. I’ve also enjoyed discovering some of the city’s green spaces; they offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Getting Around & Practical Tips: Ottawa is surprisingly walkable, especially downtown and around the major attractions. I've mostly been exploring on foot, but the public transit system (OC Transpo) is also very efficient if you need to go a bit further. If you're coming from somewhere like North Bay, the drive is quite scenic, but once you're in the city, consider parking your car and relying on walking or public transport to make your visit smoother. Every corner seems to hold a new discovery, and I'm so glad I decided to document my first trip here. I hope these tips help you plan your own amazing Ottawa adventure!
