Sometimes the best way to spend a rainy day is with some iced coffee, playdough, and a movie
Rainy days can be challenging when you have an energetic toddler at home, but they also present a wonderful opportunity to engage in creative and calming activities together. One of my favorite go-to activities is making themed playdough, such as coral reef playdough inspired by the ocean. This not only sparks imagination but also helps develop fine motor skills as toddlers mold and shape sea creatures and underwater scenes. Pairing this with a beloved animated movie like Finding Nemo creates a full sensory experience — the tactile fun of playdough combined with visual storytelling. It’s amazing to see toddlers connect their hands-on play with what they’re watching, making the experience immersive and educational. To enhance the activity, I usually prepare a cozy spot with some iced coffee nearby for myself to enjoy while supervising, ensuring the environment remains relaxed for both of us. Simple setups like this make rainy days something to look forward to instead of just a challenge to pass. Additionally, incorporating storytelling related to the playdough theme or singing songs about the ocean can deepen engagement. Encouraging toddlers to describe their creations or narrate their own little adventures fosters language development and creativity. These simple steps transform a gloomy day into a joyful bonding time filled with learning and fun.
