Book review: Divine Rivals

My whole life I have never been one for fantasy books; luckily for me, my book club decided to choose Ruthless vows for our months read (which is the second book in the duology) forcing me to read the first one.

I am SO happy that that was chosen bc it forced me to read fantasy, and this YA book was a perfect first choice to get me into a whole new, out of my comfort zone, genre.

It feels like my whole world has opened up entirely, and now, I ONLY want to read fantasy books.

I thought this story was so beautiful and written so well, with a unique story executed perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend reading this novel if: you want to get into fantasy, are in a reading slump, or simply, just need something new to read next!

⭐️Overall rating: 5/5: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

... Read moreSince sharing my initial thoughts on Divine Rivals, I've had even more time to reflect on what made this book so profoundly impactful for me, especially as someone who rarely ventured into fantasy before. It's not just the captivating plot that drew me in, but also the rich world-building and the unforgettable characters, particularly Iris Winnow and Roman C. Kitt. Their dynamic is truly at the heart of what makes Divine Rivals shine. The 'rivals to lovers' trope is executed with such finesse, evolving from professional competition as war correspondents to a deep, undeniable connection forged through shared letters and wartime experiences. Roman Kitt, with his complex personality and poetic soul, became one of my favorite male leads almost instantly. His letters to Iris, often written on a magical typewriter, create such a unique and intimate 'typewriter letters aesthetic' that adds layers to their romance. It's not just about the grand battles, but the quiet, profound moments of connection, making it a perfect fantasy romance aesthetic. The overall aesthetic of the book is something I can't stop thinking about. From the melancholic beauty of a war-torn world to the subtle magic woven into everyday life, Rebecca Ross paints such a vivid picture. The imagery evoked by the 'Gods & Goddesses' element, combined with the personal struggles of the characters, creates a truly immersive experience. I was so inspired that I even started looking up 'Divine Rivals aesthetic' collages and wallpapers online! It's a world you want to sink into, full of both heartbreak and enduring hope. Speaking of themes, Divine Rivals tackles so many powerful concepts beyond just romance. It explores grief, the devastating impact of war, the power of words, and the resilience of the human spirit. The themes are seamlessly integrated into the narrative, making you think and feel deeply. And for those wondering, 'is Divine Rivals a standalone?' it's actually the first book in a duology! The second book, *Ruthless Vows*, continues Iris and Roman's story, and I honestly can't recommend reading both enough to get the full, incredible experience. One of the things I loved most were the beautiful quotes scattered throughout the book. Lines like “I am broken, full of contradictions” or “Your words? A sublime feast” truly stuck with me, highlighting the depth of emotion and the lyrical quality of Ross's writing. If you're looking for a book that will make you feel everything, transport you to another world, and give you a powerful 'rivals to lovers aesthetic' to swoon over, then Divine Rivals is absolutely the one to pick up next. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
