FMC folds immediately anytime she's around our MMC, her resolve lasting as long as it takes for a bald guy to wash his hair. Major plot points like her father and ex boyfriend are hardly brought up and add absolutely nothing to the story. This was another case of insta-love initially seen as lust. Monica also thinks the readers are dumb and "hints" at the future of EVERYTHING for majority of the beginning of the story. Not to forget about the cringe dialogue using words like "AF" & "hella".
The only reason this book got 3 stars was because the smut was killer and I am easily entertained.
No depth whatsoever to this story- completely character driven.
... Read moreAfter diving into Monica Murphy's 'Playing Hard to Get,' I couldn't stop thinking about the whole 'playing hard to get' concept itself. In fiction, it's a classic romance trope designed to build tension and make the chase exciting, but this book really made me question its execution. The original review mentioned the FMC folding immediately, which totally undermines the title! It makes you wonder, does playing hard to get even work in real life, especially with dating or texting? While some romance novels make it a thrilling 'hard to love game,' in reality, it can often lead to confusion or seem manipulative. Nobody wants to constantly ask, 'Why are you playing hard to get?' when they're genuinely interested.
This whole idea ties into the image I saw related to the book, with the text 'Life Is a Game: Be a Player or Be Played.' It makes you reflect on how we approach relationships in general. Are we actively participating, or are we letting opportunities slip by? Sometimes, a straightforward approach is far more effective than trying to create artificial distance. I often look for romance books that explore these dynamics with more nuance, showing characters genuinely growing and navigating complex emotions, rather than relying on tropes that might feel a bit worn.
For those of you who, like me, enjoy Monica Murphy's writing style, especially the spicy bits, but might be looking for more depth or a different kind of story, it's worth exploring her other works. She's well-known for her 'Players Series,' which includes popular titles like 'Playing to Win,' 'Playing by the Rules,' and 'Falling for Her.' These often feature sports romance elements and her signature steamy scenes, so if the killer smut was your favorite part of 'Playing Hard to Get,' you'll likely find more to love in her other books. Many readers search for 'Monica Murphy's other books' or specific titles like 'the players series monica murphy' because they've found an author whose general style they enjoy, even if one specific book doesn't fully hit the mark.
Speaking of what makes a romance novel truly stand out, for me, it's about more than just the spice, even though the dialogue in the OCR, with the male character teasing about 'jealousy' and 'following her into the bathroom,' definitely hints at that delicious tension! While those moments are fun, I find myself craving stories that have real emotional stakes and character development. The original review noted 'no depth whatsoever' and that it was 'completely character driven' but without much substance. A truly great English love story novel, whether contemporary or historical, often delves into the characters' inner lives, their struggles, and how they overcome obstacles together. Themes like 'CELIBACY,' which was intriguing to see among the OCR images, could offer rich ground for conflict and growth, even if it wasn't fully explored in this particular book. It's about finding that balance between heart-pounding romance and a story that stays with you long after you've turned the last page.
