Book In Progress & Transparency 🪭

Hey besties!!!

As you all know, I’m coming out of a book coma, out of my “book-d’état”, a resistance to books AND I couldn’t have picked a better book 🤩🩷

BUT…

Let me tell you, it was not easy and it’s because I’ve noticed something…

🫥 Most modern romances are p0rn in words and as a person who struggles with Lust, this is where I had to draw the line. 😔

As much as I love reading, I cannot keep reading straight smut. Like where is the romantic aspect with fluff and swooning and dancing in the rain? Where is the wholesome romance? 😩💔

Thank God I’m a writer and can write what I feel is lacking but still, please 🙏🏾 for the love of God bring back real romance.

• VICIOUS by L.J. Shen •

⭐️ Rating so far: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I CANNOT put this book down! I love how it’s not the conventional type of book, being that it’s an enemies to lovers, fueled by hate type of book. I love how Emilia be “Standin’ AWN Bidness” for her family… like ✋🏾🤚🏾toes down for her fam

I KNOW THATS RIGHT, EMILIA ‼️

As far as Vicious, that man needs therapy bad. He’s so conflicted and confused and mean and vengeful like sir, just be happy for 2 seconds, I BEG 👁️👄👁️ it’s literally free…

👎🏾 1-thing i dislike:

Again, I hate how sexually charged this book is, all the characters wanna do so far is HUNCH. Hate driven SECS 😐😂 like please just have a conversation for ONCE. Also, Emilia might “Stand AWN Bidness” for her familia, pero, she don’t for Vicious…

LIKE MISS GWORL— PLEASE 🙏🏾 PICK UP YOUR STANDARDS AND PUT YO FOOT DOWN 💔😩

Anyways, luv yall, lemme finish this book!

Ciao BESTIES 💋🥳

... Read moreOkay, let's talk about L.J. Shen's *Vicious*, especially what drew me in before I even cracked it open – the book cover itself! You know how some covers just scream 'dark romance' and promise an intense, brooding hero? The cover for Vicious really nails that mysterious, edgy vibe. It often features a strong, almost minimalist design, hinting at the complex character you're about to meet. You see that tagline, "He's bad news wrapped in a good suit"? That perfectly encapsulates the allure and danger that the cover projects, drawing you right into Vicious's world before you've even read a single page. For me, a compelling cover is half the battle won. It sets expectations, right? It makes you wonder about the story hidden beneath. With *Vicious*, the aesthetic really suggests that enemies-to-lovers trope that we all sometimes crave – the tension, the forbidden desire, the push and pull. It promises a journey into a world where emotions run high and characters are anything but simple. This visual appeal is definitely a big reason why many of us pick up a book like this in the first place. However, this brings me to a common struggle I have with modern romance novels. While the cover of Vicious is captivating, hinting at a sophisticated bad boy, the content often dives headfirst into explicit scenes. It makes me question: where's the line between intense romance and outright smut? I'm constantly on the hunt for books that deliver that powerful emotional connection, the slow burn, the witty banter, and the deep character development without relying solely on graphic descriptions. It's like I’m searching for that wholesome romance, that feeling of swooning and genuine affection, rather than just constant physical encounters. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate passion, but sometimes it feels like the plot and emotional growth take a backseat to the explicit scenes. It's a delicate balance. I want to feel the raw emotion, the undeniable chemistry between characters like Vicious and Emilia, but I also want to see them talk and grow together. The cover might promise a dark, complicated man, but I hope the story delivers more than just his dark desires. As readers, we're drawn to these complex figures, these "bad boys wrapped in good suits," but we also want to explore their internal struggles and the love story that unfolds, not just the physical side of their relationship. Finding that perfect blend of intensity, character depth, and genuine romance feels like an ongoing quest in the contemporary romance genre.
