Sundog

Sundogs, also known as parhelia, are a popular and enchanting atmospheric phenomenon that many people find intriguing when they spot the bright, colorful patches of light appearing on either side of the sun. These optical effects occur due to the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of sunlight through the hexagonal ice crystals present in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds high in the Earth's atmosphere. During cold weather or winter months, the conditions for sundogs are more favorable because these ice crystals form in more abundant quantities. The crystals often orient themselves horizontally as they float down, acting like tiny prisms that bend the sunlight at specific angles—usually 22 degrees from the sun—resulting in the characteristic bright spots. Depending on the viewer’s location and the atmospheric conditions, sundogs may appear as bright white, or sometimes show vivid colors like red, orange, yellow, and blue. Sundogs are closely related to other halo phenomena, such as 22-degree halos, light pillars, and sun pillars, all caused by ice-crystal optics. However, sundogs are distinctive because of their symmetrical positions relative to the sun and their colorful appearance. To safely observe sundogs, it's important to avoid looking directly at the sun to prevent eye damage. One strategy is to locate the sundogs just off the sun’s position, or use indirect viewing methods like reflection on surfaces or using UV filtering glasses designed for solar observation. Many cultures have associated sundogs with various myths and omens due to their striking and unexpected appearance in the sky. Today, sundogs are appreciated by meteorologists, photographers, and sky watchers who enjoy capturing these spectacular moments in nature. Understanding sundogs not only enriches our appreciation of natural phenomena but also provides insight into atmospheric science and the complex interactions between sunlight and particles in the sky.
