How to annotate without “ruining” your books

Annotating has improved my focus and attention while reading any book, whether it’s for class or personal I always annotate!

1. Annotations are meant to be for you, while I don’t write in my books, I know many people who do and it helps them locate and remember important parts. Personally, I can’t get myself to write in brand new books so I go to tabbing and sticky notes!

2. Many of my supplies for annotating comes from hand-me-downs and SHEIN, because while I plan on keeping these books for a while, if I plan to sell these someday I will not have spent too much money on them.

3. The image on part three is the first book I annotated. Yes, I started a little while ago but reading has always been one of my passions. Starting off simple makes it easier to remember what each tab is for and where to put it. Also search up some inspiration!

4. Every single day, you are progressing and improving. So improve by doing!! I learned by figuring out what I wanted to remember from these books, so start there!

... Read moreHey bookworms! Since so many of you are curious about how I use sticky notes in my books without "ruining" them, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into my personal system. It’s truly a game-changer for staying engaged and remembering all those amazing details! First off, let's talk about the types of sticky notes and tabs. You really don't need anything fancy to start. I often use simple, colorful plastic page flags – the kind you can find almost anywhere. For my more intricate systems, I love using slightly larger sticky notes for longer thoughts or quotes, and smaller, transparent ones if I want to highlight text without fully covering it. My best tip is to experiment with different sizes and materials to see what feels right for you. I even keep a few of my favorite pens, like a fine-tipped Paper Mate Flair or a Zebra Mildliner, handy for tiny notes directly on the sticky tabs themselves. Now, for the fun part: developing your own annotation system! The key is to make it intuitive for *you*. When I first started, I used a very simple color-coding system. For instance, a yellow tab might mean something 'Important,' a pink one for 'Funny,' and a blue one for a 'Quote' I loved. As I got more comfortable, my system evolved, especially when reading complex fantasy series like Sarah J. Maas's 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' or 'A Court of Wings and Ruin.' For these longer series, I found it super helpful to categorize my tabs more specifically. For example, in my current system for 'A Court of Wings and Ruin,' I might use a specific color for 'Funny/Amusing' moments, another for 'Physical Description' of characters or places, and separate colors for 'Sad/Angry' or 'Romantic/Sweet/Cute' scenes. I even have a tab color dedicated to 'Lore/Legends/Politics/History' because those world-building details are so crucial in fantasy! Sometimes, I even assign a specific color to a main character if they have a lot of development or key lines. The beauty of using sticky notes is that it’s completely customizable and reversible. If a system isn't working, you can easily change it or remove tabs. I even write little keywords on the tabs themselves, like 'Foreshadowing,' 'Character Arc,' or 'Key Plot Point,' to give me an instant reminder of why I marked that page. This makes re-reading a breeze and helps me recall specific emotional beats or intricate plot details without flipping through every page. Don't feel intimidated by elaborate setups you see online. Start simple, perhaps with just two or three categories, and let your system grow organically as you read more. The goal is to enhance your reading experience, making it more active and memorable. Happy annotating, fellow book lovers!
