Anki Progress Update 📚

Finished session 2 of Anki for the day! Two more to go before calling it a day.

2025/1/13 Edited to

... Read moreIt's been quite the journey diving deep into Anki for my studies, and I wanted to share a bit more about how I'm tackling my daily spaced repetition goals. You saw my quick update about finishing my second session, but there's so much more to mastering Anki than just hitting 'study'. For anyone looking to truly leverage the power of anki spaced repetition study, consistency and strategy are key. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been breaking down my study load into manageable chunks. Like today, I'm aiming for four sessions. This isn't just about fitting reviews in; it's about optimizing my focus. I often find that after an hour or so, my retention starts to dip. By splitting my reviews, I can maintain high concentration throughout the day. For instance, I might do an early morning session, another around noon, a third in the afternoon (like my 3:30 PM session), and a final quick sweep before bed. This method helps me feel less overwhelmed by a huge backlog and makes the process more sustainable, especially when aiming for big goals like those for Spring 2025. When I first started, I struggled with creating effective cards. It’s not just about dumping information in. I learned that good Anki cards are atomic – one piece of information per card – and they should ask a clear question. Using images or cloze deletions thoughtfully can also make a huge difference in recall. I try to make sure each card is something I can answer quickly and confidently. If I find myself hesitating, it’s usually a sign that the card is too complex or needs to be broken down further. Another crucial aspect of anki spaced repetition study is understanding the algorithm, even if you don't tweak settings initially. The 'ease' factor and 'intervals' are what make Anki so powerful. Trusting the algorithm to show you cards at optimal review times is paramount. Sometimes, I'm tempted to hit 'again' even if I vaguely knew it, just to see it sooner. But I've learned that honest self-assessment is best for long-term retention. If I truly knew it, 'good' or 'easy' is the way to go. My current routine, as you saw, is on Day 8 of a focused study push. Sticking with it daily, even when I'm tired, is where the real magic happens. Even if it's just 15 minutes, showing up ensures I don't accumulate a massive backlog that feels impossible to clear. I also use add-ons like 'Heatmap' to visualize my consistency, which is a great motivator. Seeing those green squares fill up is incredibly satisfying! For anyone feeling daunted by Anki, my advice is to start small, be consistent, and refine your card-making skills over time. It's an incredibly powerful tool for long-term memory, and with a bit of dedication, you'll see your knowledge grow exponentially. Keep pushing through those sessions – the effort truly pays off!
