A Day in The Life of a Paramedic
A day in the life of a paramedic that travels with an oral surgeon and a team of dental assistants
We travel between three offices performing oral surgery under sedation.
My job is to prep patients and assist the surgeon while they are asleep by monitoring vital signs and treating in the event of an emergency.
My day starts with set-up of paramedic equipment like the monitor, iv setup and checking the crash cart! I set up the dental chair with all medical needs and help the dental assistants with their equipment.
My day consists of 3-4 in office surgeries with the patients under sedation and care of the oral surgeon
Pre-op, I collect a patient history
start the iv and hook every patient up to the monitor to assess through the procedure
During the procedure my job is to monitor all vital signs while the oral surgeon and assistants perform the procedure, and document all medication that may be given through the procedure.
Post-op/Recovery: I monitor and consistently assess the patient while they come out of sedation. When they’re ready to go home, I wheel them out to their driver and I get ready to do it all again!
Once all procedures are done for the day, we pack up the rooms and our suitcases and prepare for the next day at a different office!!!

A paramedic's role in healthcare is crucial, especially in dental surgery settings. They ensure patient safety by preparing equipment and monitoring health during procedures. This role demands not just medical knowledge but also strong communication skills as they interact with patients and surgical teams. Understanding pre-operative and post-operative procedures is essential—paramedics gather patient history, manage IV setups, and conduct vital sign assessments throughout surgeries. In addition to the direct involvement in surgeries, paramedics must also undergo extensive training to handle medical emergencies that may arise in the operating room. Their ability to document medication and respond quickly can mean the difference between life and death. The day-to-day variance, traveling to different offices and setting up equipment, adds to the dynamic environment that paramedics thrive in. Each day presents new challenges, emphasizing the adaptability required in this field. Furthermore, with growing advancements in dental surgery techniques, paramedics are increasingly vital in ensuring a smooth transition of care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Whether you’re considering a career as a paramedic or simply curious about the profession, understanding these responsibilities illuminates their vital role in patient-centered care.
