Homemade Pigs-n-a blanket
My kids love pigs-n-a-blanket so much and as I’m transitioning our lives into natural, traditional ways of living this dough is so versatile!
I have used the same dough recipe for cinnamon rolls, garlic bread and rolls. I only modified seasonings depending on what I use it for. It’s a slightly ✨better✨ version of my grandmother’s recipe. Enjoy!
Dough Recipe:
1 tbsp Active Dry Yeast
3 1/4 c All Purpose Flour (I use unbleached)
1 tsp salt
1/4 c Granulated Sugar
1 c Warm Water
1 Egg (I usually leave it out)
2 tbsp Unsalted Butter
Pigs:
Your favorite hot dogs from the store (I used HEB beef franks)
Instructions:
In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine the sugar, yeast and warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes or until foamy.
Using the dough hook attachment, begin adding flour one cup at a time. After 2 cups, add the butter, salt and egg (if adding) and continue kneading on low with your attachment. Gradually incorporate the third cup of the flour until the dough starts pulling away from the sides of the bowl. Then add the final 1/4 cup if needed. You want your dough to create a single ball-like form. It shouldn’t be more than slight sticky to the touch. Increase mixer speed to mid-range and allow kneading for at least 5 minutes. Your dough will be elastic and smooth, at this point.
Turn dough onto a slightly-floured surface and use your hands to shape into a ball. Grab a new bowl and slightly spray with non-stick or grease with very little butter. Place your dough into the greased bowl and cover with a tea towel, in a warm place, for 60-90 minutes. Allow the dough to rise in size X2.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
After dough has risen, turn onto slightly floured surface and roll out into a rectangle using a roll-pin or a large, smooth cup! You can use a pizza cutter or a flat-edged knife to cut the dough into 1- inch strips then wrap each strip from top to bottom, tight, around the hot dog.
Place on an 11X13 baking sheet with your silicone mat or parchment paper. OPTIONAL: Brush the tops with 1 tbsp melted butter and add seasonings. Bake for 11-15 minutes or until slightly golden. Let cool and enjoy!
