What to know before you buy chickens!
1. They grow fast! Those tiny balls of fluff at the store look that way for about a week before they start growing feathers then they have this awkward teenage stage where they look ridiculous 😅
2. Poop! The more chickens; the more poop! And you have to clean that coop! Wear gloves! 💩
3. Sickness. There are several different illnesses that can hurt or even die. I have found a Facebook group that is helpful when things come up. I’ve luckily not had any sickness but did have a bird pass from being egg bound and vent prolapse 😓
4. Predators! Everything and I mean everything wants to eat your chickens from hawks, bears, raccoon, down to the small weasels and snakes! A secure run and coop are key!🐻🐍🦅
This is just the start but these are important to know before you get and care for chickens! 🐤🐣🐥
Embarking on the journey of raising chickens has been one of the most rewarding experiences, filled with both unexpected joys and a few learning curves! When I first decided to start my own flock, I was brimming with excitement, especially as spring rolled around and local hatcheries were full of adorable *young chickens*. It wasn't just about getting eggs; it was about connecting with nature and providing for my family. But there's definitely more to it than just buying a few fluffy chicks. One of the first things I learned was the critical importance of a proper brooder setup for those tiny hatchlings. They aren't ready for the big world right away! My brooder became their first safe haven, equipped with soft wood shavings as bedding, a gravity feeder for their chick starter, and a specialized waterer that prevented them from drowning. The most crucial element was a reliable *heat lamp*, keeping the temperature just right for their delicate bodies. I remember constantly checking the thermometer, adjusting the lamp, and watching them happily pecking around. Choosing the right poultry breeds was another exciting part of the process. I spent hours researching different types, considering their temperament, egg-laying capabilities, and even the color of their shells! For instance, I was eager to have some brown eggs, so I looked into breeds like the *Black Star chicken*, known for their prolific laying and hardy nature. Each breed has its unique charm and specific needs, so matching them to my lifestyle and climate was key. As my chicks grew, a common question popped up: how do you tell if you have hens or roosters? This is where sexing chicks comes in! While it can be tricky, especially for beginners, I tried to observe their characteristics. Some methods involve looking at wing feathers – the length and patterns can sometimes indicate gender. It's not 100% accurate without professional help, but it's fun to try and guess. Knowing the sex helps in planning your flock size and avoiding too many roosters, which can lead to social issues in the coop. Finally, designing a secure and functional chicken house design was paramount. After all the effort put into raising them, their safety from predators is a top priority, as I'd already learned the hard way that everything wants to eat your chickens! I incorporated sturdy wire mesh, secure latches, and made sure there were no gaps. Good ventilation, easy access for cleaning, and proper roosting bars were also crucial considerations. I also made sure to have plenty of space for them to roam safely in their attached run, preventing overcrowding and stress. Raising chickens is truly a rewarding experience, but it requires dedication and preparation. It's a journey that teaches you a lot about responsibility and the simple joys of watching your flock thrive.
