(The Lord’s Prayer

Growing up, I said ‘The Lord’s prayer’ every night, not knowing what it meant. Even in my adult age I knew ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ by heart and still truly didn’t know all of what it meant. Today I studied the prayer and want to share with you the meaning of each verse of the prayer. Let’s dive in :)

The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)

OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN

~ “Our Father” is community, Jesus didn’t say to say “My Father”. This emphasizes that God is everyone’s holy father.

~ “Who art in Heaven”, Acknowledges that God is our Heavenly Father. It explains that although God is omnipresent, His home is in the perfect realm of Heaven, where we will one day be with Him.

HALLOWED BE THY NAME

~ “Holy is your name”

~ Hallowed means holy, consecrated, honored.

~ This acknowledges God is the one true God. He is the creator and ruler of Heaven above and earth below.

THY KINGDOM COME

(This was always one that I struggled to understand)

~ This has two meanings. This is us praying for God’s kingdom in Heaven and earth in the present tense. But we also pray for the new Heaven and the new Earth that God promised us. (Isaiah 65:17)

THY WILL BE DONE IN EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

(For us to know what the Lord’s will is in earth, we need to know what is already in heaven)

~ (Luke 10:25-27) An expert of the law asked Jesus what he needs to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, love your neighbor as yourself.”

~ (John 6:40) “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

~ This is a humbling form of surrendering to God’s will, not our own in earth. (Acts 20:24) “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD

~ “This day”, is stating that tomorrow is not promised.

~ (John 6:33) “For the bread of God id the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (John 6:48) “I am the bread of life.” (John 6:51) “I am the living bread that came down from Heaven, whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) Jesus broke bread and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

AND FORGIVE OUR TRESPASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US

~ (Mark 11:25) “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in Heaven may forgive you your sins.”

~ Forgiveness is difficult. I understand, truly, from someone who use to hold grudges. But there is beauty in forgiveness. There is beauty is deciding to lay down someones wrong doings at the foot of Jesus and let him handle it and provide you his unconditional and overwhelming comfort and peace. There is true power in forgiveness!

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION

~ (1 Corinthians 10:13) God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape so that you can endure it.

~ This is a moment of asking for guidance and discernment.

BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL

~ (Psalms 34:19) The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.

~ (James 4:7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY, FOR EVER. AMEN.
