Think about what you’re saying…
BEFORE you say it.
I’m not just talking about our words either.
As coaches and volunteers, we need to make sure we are communicating respectfully and inclusively in every way.
-verbally
-body language
-facial expressions
We need to be aware of how we are communicating with all of these avenues, and reflect to make sure we are not making inappropriate assumptions and stepping in when our assistance is not wanted or needed.
It’s our role to support the athlete at every stage, the way they want to be supported.

Inclusive communication is essential when working with athletes, especially in adaptive sports and disability inclusion settings. Beyond the words we say, being mindful of our body language and facial expressions is crucial to ensure respect and create a supportive environment. One important approach is focusing on ability rather than limitations. By highlighting what someone can do instead of emphasizing challenges or using pitying language, we reinforce dignity and encourage confidence. Another critical aspect is always asking before offering help. Often, good intentions lead to unsolicited assistance, which can feel intrusive or disempowering. Asking first shows respect for personal autonomy and helps build trust between coaches, volunteers, and athletes. Reflecting regularly on how we communicate can help identify unconscious biases or assumptions that may undermine inclusivity. Listening actively and embracing feedback from athletes ensures that support aligns with their preferences and needs at every stage. Incorporating inclusive language and respectful behavior fosters a positive and empowering environment that benefits everyone. By thinking carefully about how we express ourselves through words and non-verbal cues, we model the inclusivity that adaptive sports communities strive for. Ultimately, this thoughtful communication contributes to better teamwork, higher motivation, and a stronger sense of belonging for all participants.

Preach! 🤩 Communication is EVERYTHING, especially when supporting athletes in adaptive sports! 💪 Respect and inclusivity in every word, gesture, and expression 🙌.
