Don’t miss these tourist attractions in Florence

Next time you’re wandering the historic city of Florence, be sure to check out these famous places!

1. Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore also known and the Duomo! The cathedral looks like a drawing in real life due to its unique architecture design and colors.

2. Visit the BABAE wine window! This was one of my favorite things we did in Florence, order wine or Aperol spritz from a tiny hole in the wall!

3. Walk along the Arno! This river stretches through Florence. I recommend checking out the Ponte Vecchio which is a bridge over the river that is full of shops!

4. Admire the art inside the Uffizi Galleries! On certain days of the month entry to this magnificent museum is free! Be sure to check online for these free dates.

Florence
2024/12/13 Edited to

... Read moreFlorence truly stole my heart, and while the main attractions are absolutely unmissable, I found that diving a little deeper made the experience even richer. Beyond the initial list, I have a few more insights and practical tips that I wish I'd known sooner, especially for those looking to immerse themselves fully in the city's historic center and art scene. When it comes to the magnificent Florence Cathedral (Duomo), seeing its iconic red dome and the intricate white, green, and pink marble patterns up close is one thing, but experiencing it from above is another entirely. I highly recommend booking tickets well in advance if you plan to climb Brunelleschi's Dome or Giotto's Bell Tower. The views are absolutely breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of Florence that you won't forget. It's a challenging climb, but reaching the top and seeing the city sprawling beneath you, with the Arno River winding through, is incredibly rewarding. Make sure to check the cathedral's official website for opening times and to secure your timed entry slot – it's a true must-see sight that gets incredibly busy. For art lovers, the Uffizi Galleries are a treasure trove, and as mentioned, finding those free entry days can be a huge bonus! However, even if you pay, it’s worth every penny. My tip for visiting this huge museum is to have a plan. It can be overwhelming, so decide on a few key masterpieces you absolutely want to see (like Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus' or Leonardo da Vinci's 'Annunciation') and navigate from there. To truly make the most of your 'florence art guide' experience, consider an early morning visit right when they open or a late afternoon slot to avoid the biggest crowds. Also, don't forget that Florence offers more than just the Uffizi; the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo's David, is another essential stop for any art enthusiast. The BABAE wine window was such an unexpected delight! These charming little holes in rustic yellow walls, often easy to miss, offer a glimpse into Florence's past. My advice is to keep an eye out for them as you wander through the historic center. There are several around, each with its own unique charm. It's not just about the wine or Aperol spritz; it’s about participating in a piece of local history and enjoying a uniquely Florentine experience. I found it to be a perfect, quaint moment to pause and soak in the atmosphere. Exploring the Arno River and Ponte Vecchio was a daily ritual for me. While the shops on the bridge are fascinating, I discovered that some of the best views of the Ponte Vecchio are actually from the adjacent bridges, like Ponte Santa Trinita, especially at sunset when the colorful buildings along the banks reflect in the water. Taking a leisurely stroll along the riverbanks, you'll encounter street artists, musicians, and often catch the most beautiful golden hour light. It's a wonderful way to connect with the city's pulse and enjoy its picturesque riverside architecture. Beyond these specific sights, my best advice for Florence is to simply get lost in its charming alleyways. Wander aimlessly, discover hidden piazzas, and stop for gelato or a coffee at a local bar. The historic center is incredibly walkable, and you'll stumble upon so many beautiful details, from hidden courtyards to stunning facades, that aren't in any guidebook. Florence is a city that rewards those who explore with open minds and comfortable shoes!
