Tropical island to visit this winter!

If you're like me, winter often means dreaming of warmer weather, and let me tell you, Puerto Rico is an absolute dream come true for a tropical winter escape! One of the absolute best things about visiting Puerto Rico in the winter is the glorious weather. While much of the US shivers, you'll find sunshine and comfortable temperatures typically in the 70s and 80s, with less humidity than in summer. It’s truly a perfect winter destination that’s tropical, offering that much-needed sunshine boost. While Condado Beach is super convenient and lively, if you're looking for super calm waters perfect for a relaxing swim or a family day, I'd highly recommend a day trip to Luquillo Beach, often called 'La Monserrate.' It’s known for its gentle waves and beautiful palm-fringed shores. For a truly unforgettable experience, and if you have an extra day, consider taking a ferry or small plane to Culebra Island to see Flamenco Beach – often ranked among the world's best! Imagine sinking your toes into that soft, white sand – it’s a pristine winter destination that’s simply breathtaking and adds another dimension to your Puerto Rico beach winter experience. Exploring Old San Juan goes beyond just colorful buildings; it’s a dive into centuries of history and vibrant culture! Beyond just grabbing a bite at Señor Frog's, make sure to wander down Calle de la Fortaleza to see the governor's mansion, or explore the impressive El Morro and San Cristobal forts that guard the city. For unique souvenirs, check out the artisan shops near La Rogativa statue. Imagine sipping a coquito (a traditional Puerto Rican coconut drink, especially popular around the holidays!) at a local bar in the evening, enjoying the festive atmosphere. It truly feels like a perfect winter escape for US citizens without a passport. Even though my girls' trip focused on self-guided adventures, I’ve heard incredible things about the excursions available, especially in winter. A bioluminescent bay tour, particularly in Fajardo or Vieques, is a magical must-do! Imagine kayaking through waters that glow with every paddle stroke at night – it's an otherworldly experience. Or, if you love nature, a trip to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, offers breathtaking hikes and waterfalls. It’s a fantastic way to experience the island’s natural beauty when you visit Puerto Rico in the winter, providing a refreshing break from the beaches. To make your winter trip smooth, remember to pack light layers, plenty of swimwear, and perhaps a light rain jacket, as tropical showers can be quick and refreshing. Booking accommodations and popular tours in advance is a smart move, especially during the peak winter season. Getting around Old San Juan is easy on foot, but for exploring further, consider ride-sharing apps or taxis. A rental car gives you the most flexibility to discover hidden gems outside the city, like those beautiful beaches or the rainforest. You'll find it's a very welcoming and easy travel experience, making it the ideal tropical island winter escape.
