First timers guide to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

If it’s your first time visiting Puerto Rico here are some things you won’t want to miss! Puerto Rico is such a gorgeous island and it’s great for US citizens to visit because you don’t need a passport to travel to this tropical Caribbean escape!

While in Puerto Rico you have to spend a day soaking up the sun at the beach! Puerto Rico is also one of the only places in the world that has bioluminescent waters year round! This stunning phenomenon is rare to see, and we didn’t get the chance to see it while we were in Puerto Rico! But a tour to see this is definitely something I would prioritize next time!

You have to spend half a day walking around the San Juan historic site! There is so much history to see and these old fort structures are so beautiful to explore! We spent the afternoon walking along the water while the sunset over the ocean. Bonus: it’s free to visit!

While you’re in old San Juan, be sure to check out umbrella street! This tourist attraction changes throughout the year, but almost always has some type of beautiful display hanging above the cobblestone road!

Puerto Rico
2024/12/20 Edited to

... Read moreBuilding on my initial Puerto Rico trip, I learned so much that I wish I knew before! For fellow first-timers wondering about the best way to experience this incredible island, here are a few extra tips that will make your trip even smoother and more memorable, helping you truly make the most of your 'first timers travel guide to Puerto Rico'. First off, 'where to stay in Puerto Rico for first timers' is a huge question! While exploring the San Juan National Historic Site and Umbrella Street is a must, choosing your base depends on your travel style. Staying in Old San Juan itself offers a charming, walkable experience, immersing you in history, colorful architecture, and vibrant nightlife right outside your door. You'll find boutique hotels and guesthouses here. If you're dreaming of waking up right on a beautiful Puerto Rican beach with resort amenities, areas like Condado or Isla Verde are perfect. They offer luxurious hotels, lively restaurants, and easy access to the capital's attractions. For a more relaxed, local feel, or if you plan to visit El Yunque National Forest and the bioluminescent bays, consider staying on the east coast, perhaps near Luquillo or Fajardo. These areas offer more budget-friendly accommodations and a gateway to natural wonders, providing a different flavor of island life! Another common query is 'Puerto Rico when to go'. Generally, the peak season is from December to May when the weather is cooler, drier, and ideal for outdoor activities. This is also when prices are highest and crowds are largest. Visiting during the shoulder seasons (late spring, like May-June, or early fall, like October-November) can offer fewer crowds and better deals, though you'll want to keep an eye on hurricane season, which officially runs from June to November. No matter when you go, expect warm, tropical weather perfect for a Puerto Rican beach day! Beyond the incredible sights I shared, 'things to do in Puerto Rico' truly are endless! Don't miss out on the culinary scene. From savory mofongo (a plantain-based dish) and juicy lechón (roasted pork) to delicious street food like alcapurrias and bacalaitos, your taste buds are in for a treat. And don't forget the world-famous Puerto Rican coffee and rum – distillery tours are a popular activity! I'd also highly recommend venturing beyond San Juan for a day trip. El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, is an absolute gem for hiking to waterfalls and enjoying lush greenery. For those looking for 'hidden places to visit in Puerto Rico' that offer unparalleled beauty, consider a ferry trip to the smaller islands of Culebra or Vieques. Culebra boasts Flamenco Beach, often ranked among the world's best, while Vieques is home to another stunning bioluminescent bay, offering a more secluded experience. Finally, for a complete first timers travel guide to Puerto Rico, remember to plan your transportation. While renting a car gives you ultimate flexibility to explore the entire island, ride-sharing apps like Uber and local taxis are readily available in and around San Juan. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases can also go a long way in enhancing your interactions with locals. Pack light, breathable clothing, plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, and an adventurous spirit. Book popular tours, especially for the bioluminescent bays, well in advance – they fill up quickly! Embrace the vibrant culture, savor the local flavors, and let the island's charm sweep you away. You're in for an amazing adventure!

Also if you do go outside of San Juan do support the local business they have, from bakeries to small businesses.
