European Summer - Croatia vs Cannes
Dubrovnik Croatia and Cannes France are two different cities that have a lot in common! But also have their fair share of differences. Let’s talk about it!
I visited both Dubrovnik and Cannes on the same trip! And I loved each city for different reasons!
To me, Dubrovnik felt more historical and cultural. We stayed in the old town and this area of Dubrovnik is rich with history and ancient buildings! The vibe in Croatia felt more lively than the vibe in Cannes. However, Cannes felt much more relaxing than Dubrovnik!
Croatia has become a tourism hot spot in recent years which has led to large crowds and price increases. Cannes is already an expensive city to visit in general but feels more luxurious and relaxing with an abundance of beautiful beach clubs and high end restaurants.
If I had to choose just one city to visit again, it’s a difficult decision but I would choose Croatia! ðŸ‡ðŸ‡·
Since I talked about my European summer comparing Dubrovnik and Cannes, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what you can really expect, especially if you're curious about Dubrovnik Old Town during summer or the beautiful Croatian beaches. I mentioned Dubrovnik Old Town's historical charm, and it's truly breathtaking. But let's be real, come summer, it's a magnet for tourists! I learned a few tricks to still soak in the culture, history, and art without feeling completely overwhelmed. My biggest tip? Get up early! Walking the city walls right when they open, or exploring the narrow side streets before 9 AM, was magical. You'll find quieter corners, perfect for photos without the crowds, and really feel the ancient vibe. Later in the evening, after the cruise ship passengers have left, the atmosphere shifts again – it becomes lively but less jammed, and you can enjoy a dinner or gelato with a fantastic backdrop. Another thing to consider is Lokrum Island, just a short ferry ride away. It's an amazing escape from the Dubrovnik summer bustle, offering serene walking paths, botanical gardens, and even a Dead Sea lake for a unique swim. It’s a fantastic way to break up your day and experience a different side of the area, providing a more relaxing vibe than the main Old Town streets during peak hours. While Cannes boasts its luxurious beach clubs with sandy beaches and white umbrellas, Croatia offers a different, equally stunning beach experience. The clear blue sea here is absolutely incredible, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Near Dubrovnik, you'll mostly find pebble beaches, which are super clean and provide that amazing water clarity. Don't forget your water shoes – they're a lifesaver! Banje Beach, right near the Old Town, is famous and offers stunning views, but can also get busy. For a slightly less crowded but still vibrant option, Lapad Bay has several lovely beaches with cafes and facilities. If you're willing to venture a bit further, the Elaphiti Islands are a dream. Imagine finding your own secluded cove with crystal-clear water – it's pure bliss. I loved how easy it was to find a spot to just unwind and enjoy the natural beauty, even if it wasn't a curated luxurious beach club with lounge chairs like those in Cannes. What I found unique about Croatian beaches, compared to the more manicured feel of Cannes, is their natural charm. You'll often see locals enjoying the sea, families picnicking, and a generally laid-back atmosphere. It’s less about being seen and more about enjoying the incredibly refreshing water. Many beaches offer opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, or even renting a small boat to explore nearby coves. It's a truly authentic European beach experience. So, whether you're braving the summer crowds for Dubrovnik's rich history or seeking out those breathtaking Croatian beaches, a little planning goes a long way to making your trip unforgettable. Both cities offer unique European summer vibes, and knowing what to expect can really elevate your experience.
