Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 unique + free things to do!

If you’re visiting Puerto Rico on a budget — like we did — you’re probably looking for fun and cheap or even free things to do! One of the best free things we did was explore Castillo San Felipe del Morro! You can walk around the grounds for free and walk the path along the ocean called Paseo del Morro!

Tip: it’s hot and sunny on the property! So be sure to bring sunscreen and water for your exploring!

Bonus activity: afterwards we visited La Factoría which is one filming site of the famous hit song Despacito!

... Read moreAfter my recent adventure, I can confidently say that experiencing the magic of Puerto Rico, especially San Juan, doesn't require a huge budget. My goal was to discover authentic, unique, and free activities, and I was absolutely thrilled with what I found! Stepping into Old San Juan felt like entering a living museum. The colorful colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and vibrant atmosphere are a feast for the senses. For anyone wondering 'what is the culture of Puerto Rico like,' simply walking these streets gives you a profound insight. You'll hear lively music spilling from doorways, catch the scent of local cuisine, and see the friendly faces of residents enjoying their day. It’s a place where history, art, and daily life beautifully intertwine, offering endless 'Puerto Rican things to draw' – from the intricate ironwork balconies to the sun-drenched plazas. My absolute favorite free activity was exploring Castillo San Felipe del Morro. While there's a small fee to enter the fort itself, walking the sprawling green grounds and the path along the ocean, Paseo del Morro, is completely free! This historic stone wall walk offers breathtaking views of the deep blue ocean with white waves crashing against the rocky coastline. It's truly a unique experience. I recommend going early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun – trust me, it gets hot! Remember to bring sunscreen and plenty of water, as the OCR noted, it’s a sunny spot. You might even see people flying kites, a popular local pastime, against the backdrop of the iconic Puerto Rican flag waving proudly. Beyond El Morro, Old San Juan itself is a treasure trove of 'cheap things to do in Puerto Rico.' I spent hours simply getting lost in the labyrinthine streets, discovering hidden courtyards and admiring the vivid street art. The architecture is so inspiring; I could have spent days just sketching the intricate details of the buildings. For a taste of local life, visit one of the many public plazas like Plaza de Armas or Plaza de Colón. These are fantastic spots for people-watching, listening to impromptu music, and soaking in the local vibe. You'll find vendors selling refreshing drinks with citrus slices, reminiscent of the beautiful garnishes I saw on bar counters, a small nod to the island's vibrant culinary scene. If you're looking for more 'free things to do in Puerto Rico' that offer stunning natural beauty, don't forget the beaches! While not directly in Old San Juan, many public beaches are easily accessible by public transport or a short ride. Imagine relaxing on a sandy beach, watching the ocean waves roll in. It's the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. And speaking of unique experiences, visiting La Factoría, a famous filming site for the song 'Despacito,' was a fun addition. Even if you don't stay for drinks, peeking into its iconic doorways is a cool photo op and a little piece of pop culture history. To truly immerse yourself in the culture, seek out local eateries for authentic, affordable food. Skip the tourist traps and find a 'panadería' (bakery) for breakfast or a 'kiosko' for delicious, cheap fritters like 'alcapurrias' or 'empanadillas.' These culinary adventures are not only budget-friendly but also offer a genuine taste of Puerto Rican life. From historic walks to vibrant street scenes, Puerto Rico offers an abundance of experiences that are both unique and free, proving that you can have an incredible adventure without spending a fortune.
