New Hampshire day trip: Franconia Notch State Park

The perfect day trip in New Hampshire is Franconia Notch State Park! There are so many great outdoor activities to explore here. One of my favorite things I’ve done here is take the gondola up to the top of Cannon Mountain by riding the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway!

Tickets start at $29 for adults for a round trip and the views from the summit are stunning! We visited in the fall and had an amazing sunny day where we were literally above the clouds! We got wine and snacks at the top and hiked around the summit trails for unobstructed views of the White Mountains! I highly recommend spending an afternoon here!

... Read moreWhile the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway offers absolutely breathtaking views, as I shared earlier, Franconia Notch State Park is truly a treasure trove of outdoor adventures, and there's so much more to explore if you're planning a day trip! I recently spent more time delving into everything this incredible New Hampshire destination has to offer, and I just have to tell you about it. One of the absolute must-dos, aside from Cannon Mountain, is visiting The Flume Gorge. Seriously, you cannot miss this! It's a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. Walking through it feels like stepping into another world. The sheer granite walls rise 70 to 90 feet above, and the rushing Pemigewasset River provides a constant, soothing soundtrack. The boardwalks make it accessible, and you'll encounter stunning waterfalls like Avalanche Falls and Liberty Cascade. It’s an easy, picturesque walk, perfect for families or anyone looking for a magical experience amidst the lush, forested mountains. It’s especially vibrant in autumn when the surrounding trees are ablaze with color, creating a truly unforgettable scene. Another gem I discovered is Echo Lake Beach. This beautiful lake, nestled right within the Notch, is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Imagine swimming in crystal-clear water with towering peaks all around you. You can rent paddle boats or kayaks, or simply relax on the sandy beach and soak in the majestic scenery. It’s a fantastic spot for a picnic, with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the serene blue lake views. The water is surprisingly refreshing in the summer, and the views of the forested mountain peaks under a clear blue sky are absolutely postcard-worthy. Beyond these main attractions, the park boasts an incredible network of hiking trails for all skill levels. From the easier paths around Echo Lake to more challenging climbs up to peaks like Mount Lafayette, there’s something for every hiker. I love how you can truly immerse yourself in the stunning autumn landscape here, with vibrant foliage transforming the entire park into a painter's palette. You’ll find countless spots along the way to capture that perfect photo, whether it’s a panoramic view or a close-up of a colorful leaf. And don't think Franconia Notch closes down when the snow falls! I've heard amazing things about visiting in winter. Cannon Mountain transforms into a fantastic ski resort, offering diverse terrain for skiers and snowboarders. But even if you're not into downhill sports, the park offers incredible opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Imagine the peace and quiet of a snow-covered forest, with the scenic road winding through valleys filled with pristine white drifts. It’s a completely different kind of beauty, but equally captivating. So, whether you're looking for an exhilarating ride up Cannon Mountain, a mystical walk through the Flume, a relaxing day by Echo Lake, or an adventurous hike through the vibrant autumn landscape, Franconia Notch State Park truly has something for everyone. It's not just a place to visit; it's an experience that stays with you, always leaving you wanting to come back for more of those incredible forested mountain views.
