Teaching New Cheers to my school’s Dance Team 📣🌸🩷

... Read moreIt feels amazing to be back in my element, even if it's just a little bit here and there with my school's dance team! For those who don't know, I was actually a cheerleader for eight years – three years of middle school and four and a half years in high school. That experience shaped so much of my love for performance and teamwork, and I've been wanting to get back into it so much lately. Even with a busy plate, this is the least I can do to stay connected to that vibrant world of cheerleading and dance. One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is seeing how new cheers can instantly boost team morale and foster incredible team building. Cheers aren't just routines; they're expressions of unity and passion. When we learn new cheers, it’s not just about memorizing steps; it’s about finding a collective voice and energy that can truly electrify an audience. I’ve seen firsthand how a powerful cheer for a team can transform their confidence and presence, both on and off the stage. When teaching some new cheers, I love focusing on powerful, clear motions that capture attention. For instance, we've been practicing one that really builds energy with phrases like, "Hey you, get out of our way, because today is the day that we will blow you a-way!" Imagine combining that with a sharp "punch your right arm down," a quick "pop out" movement, or dynamic sequences like "right leg comes up, right arm goes down, swift back, swift up." These aren't just random moves; they're designed to convey power and excitement! It's all about making every motion count and delivering it with maximum enthusiasm. Repetition and an encouraging atmosphere make all the difference in perfecting these examples. Beyond the specific moves, crafting impactful cheers involves understanding what resonates with your team and your audience. It's not just about teaching some new cheers; it's about giving the team tools to express their identity. I always recommend keeping cheers concise, rhythmic, and full of positive messaging. Think about incorporating unique elements that represent your team's spirit, whether it’s a mascot, colors, or a catchy slogan. The goal is to create something memorable that unites everyone and gets the crowd involved. These examples become more than just words and motions; they become a part of the team's legacy and a source of collective pride. As a coach, my aim extends beyond just teaching dance steps and cheer motions. It’s about fostering a supportive environment where every dancer feels confident and valued. When you're thinking about how to make a dance team truly shine, remember that encouragement, communication, and mutual respect are just as crucial as perfect technique. I encourage the team to provide feedback, to experiment, and to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. It’s incredibly rewarding to see these young dancers grow not just in skill, but also in confidence and camaraderie. It’s about creating a space where they can all 'pop out' and show off their amazing talent and spirit!
