Study Habits: 🖤late night edition🖤

It is always better to work during the day and get a good rest at night, but unfortunately we all get into the situation where late night study sessions are a must. Here are my tips as a 5.0 student for the late nights:

✧ do not study/ do work on your bed. It will make it so much harder to stay awake and focused. If you are in the situation where you have no other choice (which I unfortunately am in a lot being a student in nyc), get a bed tray to force yourself to sit up and trick your brain into being in more of a study mode than sleep mode. Also DO NOT GET UNDER THE COVERS; being too cosey will make you sleepy!

✧ tea over coffee these nights is a must. Most importantly because you will need to sleep eventually and coffee late at night will make this impossible. Also, utilize the benefits of tea. If you are stressed you can drink calming tea, or something more citrusy to help you stay alert, whatever works for you!

✧ listen to upbeat focus music. Do not listen to super relaxing music if it will make you drowsy. You need to help your brain be as alert as possible.

✧go to bed when you really need to. Sometimes, it is better to make sure you can be your best with the information you do know than to stay up all night and take an exam on zero sleep; your brain needs to be sharp. Knowing when to go to bed has been the key to success for me in college.

... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my earlier tips for conquering those inevitable late-night study sessions, I wanted to dive deeper into some common challenges we all face, especially when the clock ticks past midnight. As someone who's navigated balancing demanding academics with life, I know how easily stress and burnout can creep in, and how tough it can be to find that elusive motivation. First, let's talk about student burnout and stress during late-night studying. It's not just about staying awake; it's about staying sane and effective. Beyond knowing when to hit the hay, I've found it crucial to integrate short, mindful breaks into my routine. Every 45-60 minutes, I step away from my laptop. I might do a quick 5-minute stretch, grab a glass of water, or simply close my eyes and take a few deep breaths. This isn't wasted time; it's an investment in sustained focus. I also make sure my study snacks are brain-friendly – think nuts, fruit, or yogurt, not just sugary treats. And if you're like me and love a little ambiance, a small, lit candle (safely placed, of course!) can create a calming atmosphere, signaling to your brain that this is focused, yet not frantic, time. Then there's the big one: late-night study motivation. When every fiber of your being wants to scroll through Instagram or just sleep, how do you push through? For me, it's about setting tiny, achievable goals. Instead of “study chapter 5,” I'll tell myself, “read two pages and summarize,” or “solve three practice problems.” The satisfaction of ticking off these small tasks builds momentum. Sometimes, I even use a little reward system – after an hour of solid work, I might allow myself 10 minutes of listening to my favorite non-study upbeat focus music playlist on Spotify (without looking at the screen!). It's about tricking your brain into seeing the work as less daunting. For those looking for a holistic evening/night study routine, it's all about transition. I try to create a clear boundary between my day and my study time. This might involve a quick shower, changing into comfortable (but not too comfortable!) clothes, and setting up my dedicated study space. If I'm stuck studying in bed, that bed tray from my previous tips is a lifesaver – it physically separates me from the temptation of my cozy blue blanket and that stuffed polar bear I usually cuddle. My floral mug filled with calming tea becomes a symbol of my focused time. Before I start, I quickly outline what I want to accomplish. This helps me feel in control and reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed. Finally, for working professionals studying at night, your challenges are unique. Juggling a full-time job, family, and studies requires next-level discipline. My advice? Be extremely efficient with your time. Could you listen to a lecture during your commute? Or review flashcards during your lunch break? Your late-night sessions might need to be shorter but more intense. Focus on high-impact tasks. And remember, unlike a college student with a flexible schedule, your sleep is even more critical. Prioritize it fiercely. Sometimes, it's better to get a solid 6-7 hours and wake up refreshed to tackle a concept than to push through on zero sleep, just to forget everything the next day. Finding that balance is tough, but completely worth it for your long-term success and well-being. Whether you're a college student pulling an all-nighter or a professional burning the midnight oil, remember these strategies aren't just about getting through it, but thriving. You've got this!
