How I try manage burnout as a grad student
Let’s be honest, burn out is so real in grad school. For me, it is because there are not always clear working hours, deadlines, and expectations like you would find in a “normal” job. For me, this leads to me setting unrealistic expectations for myself, then feeling tired and unmotivated when I can’t meet them.
Its helped me just try to set clear boundaries and time lines so that I can try to treat it more like a job than a life style. I also have found anything I can do to get excited about my work is also great!
This is something I am definitely still working on every week, so I would love to hear other suggestions for what works or what you guys try to do!!

Burnout among graduate students is a common issue, resulting from the lack of structure and clear expectations that typically accompany traditional jobs. Setting planned working hours, much like a 9-6 schedule, can help create a more balanced lifestyle. It's also beneficial to take breaks and change up the scenery; consider coffee dates or visits to a park to rejuvenate your mind. Prioritize self-care by making time for hobbies and physical activity, which can significantly improve overall happiness and productivity. Engaging in meaningful activities outside of academics is just as important as your studies. Additionally, staying informed about current trends in your field can help keep your enthusiasm alive. For instance, subscribe to relevant journals and participate in discussions to maintain a connection with the broader academic community, which can help in reducing feelings of isolation often experienced during graduate studies. Always remember, it's important to reach out for support and share your experiences with peers facing similar challenges.
