I am so honored to have received this fellowship and I am extremely grateful!
I worked on my application for months and had a lot of help so I wanted to share some of the tips that I learned along the way!
Starting early is so important I think I edited and changed my application around like 10 times, and for this reason it is vital to start months before the deadline.
Be sure to look at the NSF application guidelines VERY closely! They require specific formatting and look for very specific criteria and you want to make sure you follow those exactly.
Ask a lot of people to read your application material. Someone in your field for content, and people outside of it to gauge how it reads to someone that is not in the field directly.

When I was going through it, I remember spending countless hours trying to perfectly articulate these sections, knowing they are pivotal for success. Let’s start with the Statement of Background and Goals. This isn't just a resume in paragraph form; it's your personal narrative. Think of it as telling a compelling story about your journey into science. I found it helpful to brainstorm key experiences—research projects, courses, mentors, even personal moments—that ignited my passion and shaped my academic path. Then, weave these into a cohesive narrative, showing a clear progression. For instance, instead of just saying 'I did research on X,' explain why you chose X, what you learned, and how that experience led you to your proposed GRFP research. Connect your past experiences to your future aspirations, demonstrating how your proposed work is a logical next step in your scientific development. Don't forget to explicitly state your short-term and long-term goals, clearly linking them to your proposed research and how the GRFP will help you achieve them. This section is your chance to show your unique perspective and dedication, making your personal statement truly shine. Now, let's tackle Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts, which are distinct but equally vital. I realized early on that these aren't just buzzwords; they represent the core values NSF looks for. For Intellectual Merit, focus on the scientific significance and innovation of your proposed research. Ask yourself: How will my project advance fundamental knowledge? What new concepts, methods, or theories will it introduce? Will it open up new avenues of research? When describing my project, I made sure to highlight the unique approach I was taking and how it addressed a gap in current understanding. Be precise and clear about your research questions, methodology, and expected outcomes. It’s crucial to show that your project is not only feasible but also pushes the boundaries of your field. Think about the 'so what?' of your science. Broader Impacts is where you demonstrate the societal benefits of your work. This was initially challenging for me, as my research felt very niche. However, I learned to think broadly. How can your research contribute to society beyond academic publications? This could include improving STEM education, increasing diversity in science, engaging with the public, or informing policy decisions. For my application, I proposed developing educational materials based on my research findings for local high schools and mentoring underserved students in my lab. It's not enough to state general impacts; you need specific, actionable plans. The NSF application guidelines provide excellent examples, and I strongly recommend reviewing them to understand the diverse ways you can contribute. Remember to include realistic timelines and resources for your broader impacts activities. Don't forget that adhering to the specific formatting and criteria for each section is also part of demonstrating your attention to detail and ability to follow instructions, which subtly reinforces your professionalism. By thoughtfully addressing these components, you not only strengthen your application but also clarify your own vision for your scientific career and its impact.
