advice for being a TA in grad school 👩🏫✏️📓
What a lot of people don’t realize about most graduate school programs is that you have to teach or get to teach. This is great because it’s usually how you get paid to be going to school, so many programs involve you being some sort of TA.
Graduate school is my first time being a TA so I wanted to give a little bit of tips because I did four classes and then was also in charge of the TA’s in my cohort the next year.
I would say the main thing is being prepared because it helps with your stress in the situation and makes you feel as confident as possible, which is really important for the class going well. The other thing is time management. At least for me I struggled at first always trying to answer emails and being super available which is great but at the same time you can’t let it distract your work too much. So it’s important that you find the balance of being available and timely to your students but also not stopping everything all the time to immediately answer emails so I had set times during the day/week in which I would do my TA responsibilities.
Another thing that is important is to set really clear boundaries and follow them because it’s really easy to want to help people out a lot but it’s important that you stay fair and the best way to do that by setting boundaries.
