why I wake up at 6 in school when I don’t have to

A lot of my friends always ask me why I wake up really early in grad school, even though I literally get to make my own schedule for the most part, so I wanted to talk about it on here.

I didn’t start doing this until my second semester at graduate school, but I’m really glad that I started because it’s really helped me a lot with my productivity overall school performance and mental health.

In graduate school the only thing that you really have to work around is classes and meetings with your PI or your research group and usually these will be later in the day but I really like to get to campus early and start either studying or research while I’m fresh and while everything is still quiet.

this also helped tremendously with my work life balance by allowing me to have more of an afternoon to myself like my friend with jobs.

I really wanna know if other people do this so let me know what your school schedule looks like!!

Starting the day around 6 AM allows for uninterrupted study time and a peaceful environment free from weekday chaos. This tranquility can significantly boost focus and productivity, particularly for those who prefer to tackle challenging tasks when they are mentally fresh. The combination of early mornings and structured schedules often leads to improved work-life balance. Like many, I strive for an 8 AM to 5 PM routine even when flexibility is an option. Structuring your day can help create boundaries, allowing more personal time in the evenings to engage in hobbies or relax after a busy day of classes and research. Additionally, research indicates that early risers may enjoy better mental health due to regular sleep patterns and increased opportunities for exercise or meditation in the morning hours. It's also an opportunity to gather thoughts, set goals for the day, and prepare mentally before engaging in afternoon commitments. Ultimately, embracing an earlier start can be transformative. Whether through enhancing academic performance or simply carving out time for oneself, it's a strategy worth considering. Have you tried waking up early? How does it impact your daily life?
