Why I choose Columbia 🦁🩵📖

I get a lot of questions about Columbia especially how I made the choice for grad school so I wanted to make a little post discussing it. The one thing that I do want to emphasize is that choosing a graduate program is very individualized and varies from the type of program you were going to do so it’s really important that you look into the specifics of each program instead of the university at whole!!

For me and I think for most people that are doing PhD’s that involve a lot of research, the most important thing is who you were going to be working with and the research opportunities there! For me, I knew exactly what I wanted to do so going to a program that Moore guaranteed who you would be working with off the bat was something that I was interested in versus a lot of programs do rotations, which is good if you’re not exactly sure.

The other really important thing to consider is the financial aspect. So if you’re guaranteed a teaching job or a research position or something that’s going to pay you while you’re at school and how much the program is.

Another really important aspect is location. I loved New York, but I also like going home a lot and I knew that it would be easy for me to get home to visit from New York.

This is very specific for me, but I knew that I wanted to stay doing the activities that I loved so I did the research and made sure that Columbia had a dance program so if you’re into a certain type of club or something, making sure that those universities have those programs that you could join so that you can do things outside of your work!

... Read morePicking a grad school is such a huge decision, and while my initial post covered why I landed on Columbia, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what it's really like and how to make the most of your journey here, especially concerning aspects that often come up in questions. Immersing Yourself in Columbia's Iconic Campus One of the biggest perks of studying at Columbia is being surrounded by such a historic and beautiful environment. When people ask about specific locations like the Butler Library steps or the Mathematics Building, they're really asking about the daily experience. I quickly found myself spending countless hours in and around Butler, whether it was studying inside, meeting friends on the steps, or just enjoying a quiet moment, sometimes even catching a beautiful sunset over the campus. It's not just a building; it's a hub for student life and a true academic sanctuary. And the famous Columbia University lion statue isn't just a mascot – it's a meeting point, a landmark for photos, and a symbol of the institution's rich history. Getting to know these spots makes Columbia feel like home. These aren't just names on a map; they become part of your everyday routine, grounding your incredibly intense academic journey. Making the Financials Work: Understanding Your Stipend and Support Let's be real, the financial aspect, or your stipend, is a huge consideration for grad school. It’s not just about getting money; it's about understanding how it works and planning accordingly. When I was looking, knowing how my stipend would cover living expenses in New York was crucial. Don't be afraid to ask detailed questions about tuition waivers, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and any other financial aid opportunities. My advice is to create a realistic budget for living in NYC. This means looking beyond just rent to include food, transport, and a bit for social activities. Having a clear picture of your financial situation from the start can significantly reduce stress and allow you to focus on your studies and research. Beyond Academics: Life in NYC and Finding Your Balance The LOCATION of Columbia in New York City is truly unparalleled, but it's essential to figure out how to balance rigorous academics with the endless opportunities the city offers. For me, continuing my activities, like dance, was non-negotiable. I actively sought out clubs and programs at Columbia that allowed me to maintain these passions. It’s vital for mental well-being to have outlets outside of your studies. Exploring the city, from its museums to its parks and diverse neighborhoods, can be a fantastic way to de-stress and broaden your horizons. Don't let your studies completely consume you; NYC is an incredible resource for personal growth and fun, even on a grad student budget! Finding that rhythm between deep study sessions and enjoying the city is key to a fulfilling grad school experience. The Power of Prestige: How Columbia's Reputation Can Boost Your Career The PRESTIGE of a Columbia degree is undeniable, and it plays a significant role in future career prospects. It's not just about the name on your diploma; it's about the doors that open due to the quality of education, the networking opportunities, and the research impact. This reputation attracts top faculty and collaborators, directly impacting the quality of your research and the opportunities for your post-grad career. While you're in the thick of it, it might feel like endless deadlines, but remember that the hard work you put in at a place like Columbia builds a foundation that can propel you into incredible professional pathways. Choosing Your Research Path: Finding the Right Mentor Finally, and perhaps most importantly for many PhD students, is the CHOICE OF RESEARCH MENTOR. This person will be your guide, collaborator, and often, your biggest advocate. My original post touched on finding a program that guarantees a specific mentor, which was perfect for my focused research interests. If your program involves rotations, use them wisely to explore different labs and find someone whose research aligns with yours, but also whose mentorship style suits you. It’s like a professional marriage – compatibility is key. Don't underestimate the importance of their guidance, not just for your thesis, but for navigating the academic world. These deeper insights, I hope, give a more comprehensive picture of what it's like to be a grad student at Columbia and how to thrive here. It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience!
