How does time work?
It’s so crazy that time can feel like it’s barely moving one moment, and the next moment it feels like just the blink of an eye.
Time is one of the most intriguing concepts in our lives, yet it remains somewhat mysterious. Many people notice that sometimes time seems to crawl, such as when we are waiting or bored, while at other times, it feels like it’s rushing past, especially during joyful or busy moments. This perception of time can be deeply influenced by attention, emotions, and memories. For example, when reflecting on personal milestones like your baby daughter turning 26 today, as shared, it’s common to feel astonished at how quickly the years have flown by. This feeling often arises because meaningful moments and strong memories compress our experience of the passage of time. When recalling events like a 5th grade science project long ago, it can seem as if it was just yesterday, even though decades have passed. Psychologists suggest that the novelty of experiences plays a role in how we perceive time. New experiences tend to be more vividly encoded in memory, making the time period feel longer in retrospect. Conversely, routine and repetitive days can blend together, making time seem to pass faster. Moreover, emotional states impact our internal clock. Anxiety or anticipation can slow down time during the moment, while happiness or engrossing activities might make hours feel like minutes. The well-known phrase "time flies when you’re having fun" reflects this phenomenon. Understanding these aspects of time perception can help us appreciate why time can feel so elastic. It also encourages us to create meaningful experiences and savor the moments that truly matter, as these become treasured memories that shape our sense of time’s flow.
