Wild on the shelf
Elves be busy.
Oh, the magic of Elf on the Shelf! Every December, our household transforms with the arrival of our little scout elf, Sparkle. If you’ve ever wondered, 'What do elves on the shelf do all day (or night)?' you're in the right place! It’s all about creating those unforgettable festive moments for the kids, and trust me, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Mostly, our elf is busy. Super busy! Before darting back to the North Pole each night to report to Santa, Sparkle loves to get into all sorts of antics. It's usually a mix of silly, sometimes a little mischievous, and always heartwarming. Here are some of my go-to ideas that keep the kids guessing and giggling: 1. The Mischievous Elf: This is often the most fun! One morning, my kids woke up to find Sparkle had toilet-papered our Christmas tree! Another time, he drew silly faces on all the fruit in the fruit bowl. He’s even been caught 'raiding' the cookie jar, leaving a trail of crumbs behind. It creates such a buzz every morning! 2. The Funny Elf (Cracking Jokes!): Our elf loves a good laugh! I remember one morning, Sparkle was found sitting next to a tiny whiteboard with a joke written on it: 'What happens when an elf cracks a joke?' and the answer below: 'It cracks UP!' The kids absolutely loved it and spent the morning telling each other elf jokes. Sometimes, he just leaves a note saying, 'I heard a funny joke last night!' – and that alone can make them wonder. 3. The Helpful Elf: Not all elf activities are about mischief. Sparkle sometimes leaves little notes encouraging good behavior, like 'Help with chores today!' or 'Remember to share your toys!' He’s also been found 'reading' a book to a pile of stuffed animals, or even leaving a small, wrapped treat (like a candy cane) for a particularly good day. 4. The Creative Elf: Our elf often brings tiny craft supplies, like mini googly eyes or glitter, and uses them to decorate a picture frame or a small ornament. Once, he made a tiny paper chain out of gum wrappers! It sparks so much creativity in the kids. 5. The Adventurous Elf: Sometimes, Sparkle sets up a mini scavenger hunt around the house, with little clues leading to a small prize or a Christmas activity idea. Or, he might be found 'ziplining' across the living room on a piece of string! The key is to keep it fresh and simple. You don't need elaborate setups every night. Sometimes, just moving the elf to a new, unexpected spot is enough. The magic isn't just in what they do, but in the wonder and joy it brings to the children's faces every morning. Watching them search for Sparkle and discover his latest adventure is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season. It truly makes the countdown to Christmas unforgettable!
