Title: The Inn at Summer Island

Author: Rachel MaGee

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My Thoughts: This book is about Millie, a young woman who inherits her Aunt Mildred's run down B & B. Millie sets out to restore it, but she's facing challenges with the local HOA, and minor hurricane damage after she gets halfway through the renovations. She meets Braxton, her neighbor, Ex- pro golfer, and the head of the HOA. Braxton faces his own challenges. He has a daughter, Alice. I really like Millie's character . She is determined, hopeful, independent and humorous. She's so determined to fix up the B & B that she was trying to DIY the entire thing by herself... until the community volunteered to help her. Overall, this was a really cute love story. It's completely PG. It's giving Hallmark movie vibes. super good book for an audiobook I chose on a whim!

... Read moreOkay, let's clear up a little common confusion right from the start! If you landed here searching for 'Summer Island' by Kristin Hannah, you're in good company – it's a popular title! But today, I want to gush about another gem that shares a similar island vibe: 'The Inn at Summer Island' by Rachel Magee. Trust me, if you love heartwarming stories with beautiful settings and a dash of romance, you'll definitely want to hear about this one. First impressions often come from the book cover, and Rachel Magee's 'The Inn at Summer Island' perfectly captures its cozy, inviting essence. Imagine this: a sweet, fluffy dog lounging contentedly on a rustic wooden deck, with two inviting white Adirondack chairs positioned perfectly to give you the best view of a serene beach at sunset. Those charming string lights twinkling overhead? They just add to the magical, relaxed atmosphere. The cover art truly whispers 'escape,' and the tagline 'Starting over just got a lot more complicated' hints at the delightful chaos Millie steps into. It instantly makes you want to curl up and dive into an island adventure. This story is all about Millie, a young woman who inherits a charming but decidedly run-down B&B from her Aunt Mildred. Talk about an unexpected new chapter! She quickly learns that starting over isn't just about painting walls and fixing leaky roofs. She faces challenges from the local HOA (interestingly led by the intriguing Braxton, an ex-pro golfer who also happens to be her neighbor!), and even a minor hurricane throws a wrench in her renovation plans. But Millie isn't one to back down. Her determination, independence, and humor really shine through as she tries to DIY the entire thing by herself. What I loved most is seeing the community rally around her; it’s such a heartwarming reminder of small-town charm and how people come together to support each other. The original review mentions 'Hallmark movie vibes,' and I couldn't agree more. It’s completely PG, filled with sweet romance, personal growth, and plenty of feel-good moments without any spice. If you're into those cozy, uplifting stories you can curl up with on a rainy day, this is an absolute perfect fit. And for those who enjoy audiobooks, like I did, this one is an absolute treat. The narration (by Rachel L. Jacobs, as noted on the cover!) really brings Millie’s character and the vibrant island setting to life, making it an immersive listen for commutes, chores, or just relaxing with a cup of tea. While it might not be the 'Summer Island' you initially searched for, Rachel Magee's take offers a beautiful narrative about resilience, community, and finding love in unexpected places – themes often explored in popular women's fiction. If you appreciate strong female protagonists, picturesque settings, and stories that leave you feeling hopeful and uplifted, you might just find your next favorite author in Rachel Magee. Her writing has a way of sweeping you away to the island, making you feel like you’re right there with Millie, experiencing every triumph and challenge. Don't let the similar title deter you; this 'Inn at Summer Island' is a lovely destination all its own, perfect for anyone looking for a sweet escape.
