Rose and Edward

Rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood always sparks so much creativity in me, and this time, I just had to draw something! This piece featuring Rose and Edward is actually one of my very first attempts at FMA fanart, and I'm really happy with how it turned out, especially considering I just used a simple pencil sketch. There's something so captivating about their dynamic throughout the series, and it really pushed me to try and capture their essence. Rose's journey, from a devout believer in the Sun God to someone who confronts harsh realities and finds her own strength, is incredibly inspiring. She's a character who undergoes significant growth, and seeing her evolve from a vulnerable village girl to a strong, independent woman is one of the show's underrated arcs. And Edward, with all his fiery determination, brilliant mind, and hidden vulnerabilities, is just such a compelling protagonist. Their interactions, whether they're discussing faith, humanity, or even just bickering over something trivial, always stick with me. I think that's why they were the first characters I gravitated towards sketching from the series – their relationship offers so much visual and emotional depth. When I was working on this pencil sketch, I really focused on capturing their individual essences and those iconic details that make them instantly recognizable. For Rose, I tried to get her distinct dreadlocks just right, which can be tricky to draw, and that simple yet elegant collared shirt she often wears. And of course, Edward wouldn't be Edward without his signature long hair, often tied back, and that iconic red coat that defines so much of his look! It was a fun challenge to capture their expressions and postures, trying to convey a sense of their personalities even in a static drawing. I even made a little note about their perceived heights in my sketch, playing on how Edward is always sensitive about his stature – it's interesting how the OCR picked up on that detail about them being the 'same height' in my drawing, even with their age difference (Rose at 80 years old in my headcanon vs. Edward at 15 years old, as the text picked up!). It just goes to show how much personality and a bit of fun can be conveyed even in a simple sketch! The 'Edward x Rose' dynamic is something many fans discuss, and I find it absolutely fascinating. Is it a deep friendship born out of shared trauma? A mentor-mentee relationship where Edward inadvertently helps Rose find her path? Or does it hint at something more romantic down the line, a 'what if' scenario that fanfiction thrives on? Regardless of how you interpret it, their connection is undeniable and adds so much depth to the story. I often wonder what other artists focus on when they draw them and what aspects of their relationship resonate most with people. If you're also into anime drawing, especially FMA, I'd love to hear your thoughts! What characters do you find most challenging or rewarding to sketch? Do you have a favorite scene or interaction between Rose and Edward? Sometimes, just grabbing a pencil and letting your favorite anime inspire you is the best way to start. It doesn't have to be perfect; it's all about enjoying the process, expressing your love for the series, and sharing it with a community who understands. This piece was a great reminder of that for me, and I'm already thinking about who to draw next from Amestris!
