Writing a book

So I started writing a book I’ve been working on it for about a year and a half but I took a bunch of time off! It’s romance mixed with mental health. I keep redoing all the details I have so far. So here’s my question. How much details do you like? If a guy walks into a bar do you wanna know the floor is sticky or how it smells in the bar? Do you want to know how a girls clothes hugged her every curve? Please help cuz I keep going back and forth!

... Read moreWhen writing a compelling romance novel intertwined with mental health themes, the amount of detail you include can significantly affect reader immersion and emotional connection. Descriptive details, such as the sticky floor of a bar or the scent of the environment, create sensory experiences that help readers visualize scenes and feel present in the story. These small touches enhance authenticity and deepen atmosphere without overwhelming the narrative. Character detail, like how clothing fits or moves, adds to characterization and can subtly communicate emotions or personality traits, contributing to readers' understanding and attachment to the characters. However, balance is key. Overloading descriptions may slow pacing and distract from the main plot, whereas too little detail can leave scenes feeling generic or flat. An effective approach is to use details purposefully—choose descriptions that reveal character insight, enhance mood, or advance the story. Incorporating mental health themes requires sensitivity and accuracy. Descriptions should reflect characters’ emotional states and environments in a way that feels genuine and respectful. Engaging beta readers or sensitivity readers can help ensure your portrayal resonates well. Ultimately, gauge detail by your story’s tone and audience preference. Some readers cherish immersive, richly textured settings, while others prefer a brisk pace focused on plot and dialogue. Experimenting with varying levels of detail and soliciting feedback can guide you to the right balance to captivate your readers. The hashtag #writingabook and forums like #bookdiscussions and #writingideas serve as excellent platforms to gather reader opinion and connect with fellow writers who can share experiences about managing descriptive detail in narrative writing.
