Fish keeping Tips for Your First Betta Fish!

Fishkeeping might seem daunting at first, but betta fish are often a great choice for beginners! However, being beginner-friendly doesn’t mean they can be kept in tiny bowls with no décor or proper equipment. 🇹🇭Being native to Thailand’s rice paddies, bettas are hardy and adapted to small environments, but they still need space, warmth, and enrichment. Keep in mind, they’re highly territorial, and male bettas will fight if kept together—❌so never house two males in the same tank!

🧠Here are a few of my top Betta Fishkeeping tips as someone who currently successfully cares for 6 betta fish!

1. 📝📚Fishkeeping is not one-size-fits-all.

When it comes to keeping fish, you’ll hear a lot of advice—do this, don’t do that—but ultimately, YOU are in charge of making the final decision for your aquarium. Don’t stress over one person’s method being the only way. Fishkeeping is a journey, and there’s plenty of room for learning and experimenting. Get your information from multiple sources: watch YouTube videos, read forums, and join fishkeeping communities on Discord or social media to ask questions and learn from different perspectives. 🧐The more you know, the better care you’ll provide for your fish!

2. ☯️Maintain a Healthy Ecosystem.

The healthiest fish thrive in environments that mimic nature. I always recommend using natural décor—❌skip the colorful rocks and plastic decorations. 🙂‍↕️Opt for live plants and real wood, which not only look better but also create a healthier habitat. Bettas, for example, benefit from tannins in the water, which come from driftwood🪵or Indian almond leaves🍂. These naturally lower the pH slightly and create a more natural, stress-reducing environment.

💡⚠️Be cautious with adding unnecessary chemicals, which can harm your fish and disrupt the balance of your tank. Some common products that are often unnecessary or even harmful include:

• ❌pH Up/Down: Can cause sudden, dangerous pH swings.

• ❌Ammonia Lock Products: Masks problems rather than solving the root cause.

• ❌Water Clarifiers: Temporary fix that can interfere with filtration.

• ❌Algae Destroyers: Can harm fish and plants while disrupting the ecosystem.

• ❌Excessive Stress-Coat Products: Often overused and can build up in the water unnecessarily.

• ❌Bacterial Boosters: Usually unnecessary if your tank is properly cycled.

✅It’s best to rely on natural methods and regular maintenance, rather than constantly adding chemicals, to keep your tank balanced and your fish healthy.

3. ‼️Provide the Non-Negotiables.

While betta fish are beginner-friendly, they still have some specific needs. First and foremost, give them a spacious tank—at least 5 gallons—for them to explore and swim comfortably. A heater is a must, as bettas are tropical fish that need water temperatures between 75°F and 80°F. A filter is also crucial, not just for keeping the water clean but for housing beneficial bacteria that help break down ammonia and waste, keeping the water conditions safe. A well-maintained tank with these basics will ensure your betta stays happy and healthy.

**🧪I recommend purchasing the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT 800 to fine tune the monitoring of your water. It is a bit pricey but totally worth it. I might even go as far to say that a test kit is a non-negotiable in my book!**

4. 🌊🪣Do Your Water Changes!

Regular water changes are essential for maintaining a healthy aquarium. Over time, toxins like ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates build up in the water, which can harm your fish😵. Even with a good filter🧽, which helps remove debris and provides a home for beneficial bacteria, water changes are still necessary to dilute these harmful substances and replenish essential minerals. Aim for 25-30% water changes weekly to keep your tank clean and your fish in the best health!

>>>🌿🌱Live plants also help keep the water clean by absorbing nitrates and adding oxygen. They create a healthier, more natural environment, working alongside your filter to maintain water quality. They’re also so satisfying! Choose low light plants for easy care.

... Read moreHi fellow fishkeepers! Building on my initial tips, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some questions I often get, especially for those just starting out. It's truly a joy watching your betta thrive, and these extra insights can make a huge difference! Feeding Your Betta: What, When, and How Much? One common question I see is about feeding. Bettas actually have tiny stomachs, roughly the size of their eye! Overfeeding is a big no-no and can lead to digestive issues and poor water quality. I’ve found that high-quality betta pellets or flakes should be the staple, supplemented with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia a couple of times a week as a treat. For an adult betta, 2-4 pellets twice a day is usually sufficient. Watch how quickly they eat; if food is left after a few minutes, you’re likely feeding too much. I always recommend observing your fish and adjusting slightly. I also make sure to offer a varied diet, as this keeps them engaged and provides a wider range of nutrients. Remember, a well-fed betta is a happy betta, but a properly fed betta is a healthy one! Understanding Betta Size and Growth While my main article emphasized a minimum 5-gallon tank, understanding your betta's potential size helps put that into perspective. Most common bettas, like veiltails or crowntails, will grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches long. Plakat bettas, with their shorter fins, might appear smaller but can still reach similar body lengths. They grow quite quickly in their first few months, reaching their adult size by about 6-8 months with proper care. This is why giving them enough space from the start is crucial, allowing them to explore and reducing stress. A spacious, planted aquarium with plenty of room to swim, like those beautiful setups we see in pictures, really lets them flourish! Can You Teach a Betta Tricks? Believe it or not, yes! Bettas are intelligent and can learn simple tricks with patience and positive reinforcement. I've personally had success with finger-following and even jumping for food. To start, try holding a small piece of food just above the water surface. With time, your betta might learn to jump for it. You can also train them to swim through hoops or follow your finger. The key is consistency and short training sessions (1-2 minutes) to keep them engaged without stressing them out. It's a wonderful way to bond with your fish and really see their personality shine! Choosing the Perfect Name for Your Fin-tastic Friend! This is one of the most fun parts of getting a new pet! While the article focuses on care, a great name can truly reflect your betta's unique personality. I've named mine after colors, jewels, and even food items! Think about their appearance – a vibrant blue betta might be named "Sapphire," or a fiery red one "Blaze." Watch their behavior too; a curious explorer could be "Scout," or a majestic swimmer "Poseidon." Don't be afraid to get creative! Some owners even look to literary or mythological figures. Ultimately, the best name is one you love saying and that fits your little finned companion. It's all part of the joy of your fishkeeping journey!
