No More Stolen Indigenous People!

I had some errands to run this afternoon - but not before I dressed with purpose. Today, May 5th, we honor and raise awareness for our missing and murdered Indigenous brothers, sisters, families, and friends.

In many Indigenous cultures, red is believed to be the only color spirits can see. By wearing red, we call out to the spirits of our missing loved ones, reminding them - and the world - that they are not forgotten. Let's bring their spirits home.

The handprint over the mouth is a symbol of oppression - of voices silenced in the face of injustice. It represents the pain and resilience of our people, and the urgent need to speak up for those who can’t.

... Read moreThe issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) is a crisis that has gained momentum in recent years, highlighting systemic injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. Organizations and activists have been working tirelessly to shed light on the alarming statistics showing that Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by violence. Awareness campaigns often encourage individuals to wear red on May 5th, symbolizing solidarity and remembrance. In many communities, the handprint symbol serves as a reminder of the stifled voices of victims and the need for advocacy. Engaging in discussions about MMIW is vital to fostering understanding and driving change. As society collectively acknowledges these tragedies, it becomes imperative to support legislation that protects Indigenous rights and enhances safety measures in vulnerable communities. Moreover, grassroots movements play a crucial role in advancing awareness and educating others about the real stories of those impacted by this crisis. By utilizing social media campaigns and community events, these movements can mobilize individuals to advocate for justice, raise funds, and provide resources for families affected by these tragedies. It’s essential for allies and advocates to listen to Indigenous voices and collaborate to effect meaningful change. Let us stand together to ensure that no one is forgotten, and that justice prevails in the fight against violence towards Indigenous communities.
