I’m sitting on the ground right now, staring at a pen of eight horses.
Eight out of dozens that are shipping out today.
I had to give myself something to focus on. Something I could actually control in the middle of all of this. So I started with the pen right in front of me.
Eight.
Two ex-prison mares. One is 26. The other is close to 20. They did their job like so many of them do. Yet, this is where they ended up.
An old gray mare who is nothing but skin and bones. She’s so weak she keeps laying down.
A palomino.
An ex race horse that someone once cared enough to take and believe in… and still let him end up here.
A senior paint horse.
A sorrel gelding.
Another gray mare.
No horse is immune to this.
Not the well-trained ones.
Not the ones who worked.
Not the ones who were loved at one point.
Once they’re here, this is it.
This is where their story usually ends.
But today, I’m sitting here looking at them… and I know something they don’t. They have an amazing community behind them.
A community that shows up.
A community that steps in.
A community that gives them a second chance when no one else will.
