You watched us step in and intervene when they were like this…
Shut down. In pain. Unsure of every single thing we were asking of them.
Pegasus didn’t trust anyone. Not because he didn’t want to… but because of what had already been done to him.
Preacher never left his side.
We got them to the hospital, got answers, and started a full round of IV treatment for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis.
That alone changed everything physically. Then they went to Pete’s where his team handled their crumbling hooves. Fitting them in new clogs to support their massive bodies while their healthy new hooves grow out.
Now they’re out on pasture in their clogs, gaining weight, growing out the feet that failed them, and finally able to just be horses.
These are some of the moments in rescue that make it all worth it. Seeing them come back. Their spark. Their confidence. Their energy is alive again.
Rescuing horses like Pegasus and Preacher is a challenging but deeply rewarding experience. When I first encountered these mustangs, their mistrust and physical pain were palpable. Pegasus, especially, was shut down and unsure, carrying the weight of past trauma that made it hard for him to trust humans again. Watching him and Preacher side by side reminded me how strong bonds form even in the hardest times. One of the biggest hurdles was diagnosing and treating Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), a neurological disease that severely affected them. Thanks to timely hospital intervention and IV treatments, both horses showed significant physical improvement, which was truly heartening. The team at Pete’s hoof care center played a crucial role by fitting them with special clogs to support their damaged hooves, preventing further pain and allowing new, healthy growth. Now, seeing these horses grazing peacefully in the pasture, gaining weight and confidence, is what rescue work is all about. Their transformation is a testament to compassionate care and the vital support from donors who enable such medical treatments and rehabilitation efforts. If you’ve ever wondered how your donations help, it goes far beyond just funds. They provide life-saving medical care, proper nutrition, expert hoof care, and the chance for these horses to just be horses again. Each small contribution creates a ripple effect of healing and hope. For anyone inspired by these stories, getting involved can be incredibly fulfilling. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, your support breathes new life into these neglected animals. It’s a reminder that every rescued horse is proof of resilience and why we keep saying yes to second chances. Sharing these journeys is important because it connects us to the real impact of rescue efforts. It’s not just about saving animals; it’s about restoring their dignity and spirit. Seeing their spark return – their curiosity, energy, and the innate joy of being free – is what makes all the challenges worthwhile. Every dollar helps write the next hopeful chapter for these horses and many others waiting for their own second chance.
