She wasn’t supposed to make it.
We got the call in the middle of the auction chaos, the usual weight of it all—and then this… a baby zebra who was not doing well to being orphaned. Whether it was intentional or not I don’t know, but she needed extra support.
So we said yes.
We didn’t post her right away.
Not because she wasn’t important—but because she was fragile. The kind of fragile where you don’t make promises out loud yet… and hope her body chooses to fight.
Well, she did and she has!
She’s almost a month old now.
Still tiny. Still figuring out the world.
Still deciding, moment by moment, that she’s going to stay.
When we lost Mamba, this was all happening during the same time frame as the call for little Lola - we actually took her first to the vet to see if she would take to Mambas nurse mom— the mom was TERRIFIED of little Lola. They might be similar in the sense that they are ‘equines’ but they are absolutely different species.
Little Lola is growing into exactly what a zebra is supposed to be— sweet one second… wild the next.
Zebras aren’t like horses.
They don’t soften the same way.
They don’t give trust freely.
There’s something about babies like this… the ones that come in with everything stacked against them…
that make you slow down and pay attention. You pour everything int them andjust hold your breath and hope.
Every single day she’s here is something she had to fight for.
