I heard him before I saw him.
Not a horse. Not the usual noise you hear walking into an auction. Something different.
Something that didn’t belong and a sound I know all too well.
I followed the sound… and then I saw him. Standing in a pen. In the middle of an auction barn.
It’s always so crazy when you see one in person and it never stops not being that way.
It doesn’t matter what you type of equine the are..
It doesn’t matter how rare or different. They can still end up here.
Different species. Same fate.
I stood there just watching him. He is so stressed out. They hate this type of environment it’s too much change and too much stimulation — it breaks my heart.
I think of all of our zebras and how happy they are — all of them just out on pasture living their best lives. Never knowing this type of stress.
Being at an auction barn and hearing an unusual sound among the typical noises of horses can be haunting. It reminds me how auctions are overwhelming places for all animals, regardless of species. The constant change, bright lights, loud noises, and confinement cause immense stress to creatures used to open spaces and calm surroundings. I’ve seen many animals struggle in these environments, including zebras, horses, and other equines. Their natural instincts are disrupted; fear and anxiety become palpable. What strikes me most is the heartbreaking contrast between the life these animals could lead—roaming freely on pastures—and the emotional turmoil they endure in auctions. One particularly powerful memory is helping reunite a baby animal with its mother amid the chaos. You wouldn’t believe how crucial such small acts can be to easing their distress. The thought that all these different species share the same fate in auctions is sobering. It’s a call for greater awareness and compassion. For those who care deeply about animal welfare, supporting sanctuaries and rescue groups that provide peaceful homes can be a way to make a difference. These refuges offer a chance for animals to live without the stress of auctions, giving them the dignity and love every creature deserves. Whenever I reflect on these experiences, I’m reminded why saving the lives of mustangs and other wildlife is so important—because every animal’s well-being matters deeply.
