Not only are they super practical for keeping things tidy, but they also add such a charming, handmade touch to your home. It's truly a craft with purpose, and a fantastic little Midwest craft project to tackle on a cozy afternoon. Making a DIY plastic bag holder, especially a crocheted one, is much simpler than you might think. All you really need is some yarn and a crochet hook. For materials, I usually opt for a durable, washable yarn like acrylic or a cotton blend – something that can hold up to being stuffed with bags. My latest one even features a lovely color gradient, just like the one in my picture, going from deep brown to olive green and then a warm red-orange. You can achieve this by either finding a self-striping yarn or by simply changing colors every few rows. It adds such a unique flair! The basic idea is to create a long, cylindrical tube with a mesh pattern. This mesh design is perfect because it's flexible, allowing you to cram in plenty of bags, and you can easily see how many you have left. For beginners, a simple double crochet mesh works wonderfully. You'll want to start by chaining enough stitches to form a circle that's about 8-10 inches in diameter when joined, then work in rounds. The mesh pattern is usually achieved by alternating double crochets with chain stitches, creating those lovely gaps. Once you have a tube about 18-24 inches long, you'll close off one end with a tight drawstring or a few rows of single crochet to form the bottom. For the top, you can add a simple loop or another drawstring, making it easy to hang your holder anywhere – inside a pantry door, from a hook in the kitchen, or even in the garage. What I love most about this project is how customizable it is. You can play with different yarn weights, hook sizes, and of course, colors! Imagine one in bright, cheerful tones for a kids' play area or in neutral shades to blend seamlessly with your kitchen decor. It's an incredibly satisfying feeling to turn a skein of yarn into something so useful and decorative.
